i really do think this building will get built, but construction won't start for a few years I think. the team behind the development of tribune tower seems very serious about this. i am okay with waiting though. this building deserves to be built. it is one of the most beautifully designed building and would look amazing in our already gorgeous, iconic skyline.

Didn't they say it won't start until 2022

yes, the development team has targeted summer of 2022 for the start of construction for many months now.

of course, that is definitely subject to change given the current uncertainties surrounding everything in our civilization, but that is at least where we're starting from as far as what the development team has explicitly stated in the past.

^ They mentioned today that they aim to break ground Q4 2021. Somehow they're more optimistic now about this

that's interesting.

though with any developer-driven timeline for anything that far out, it's usually a safe bet to add at least 1 or 2 quarters at a minimum, so Q4 2021 could easily become Q2 2022 in reality.

but in the realest reality, everything about the economy is so unknown right now that it's all pretty much a crap shoot at the moment.

The way I heard it was that the earliest they would be able to break ground would be Q4 2021 but more likely 2022. . . [/nitpick]

Summer 2022 will come sooner then you think trust me

I remember when Vista was first proposed back in 2014 and I was worried it might not get built but here we are, it's topped out and almost completed

Right, considering the last building of this caliber went up nearly 50 years ago, a year or two doesn't sound too bad.

Great news about the approval though, I won't celebrate until this thing is already well on its way up but still nice to hear

City planners OK tall neighbor for Tribune Tower

The city’s planning authority Friday approved zoning for a hotel and residential high-rise just east of Tribune Tower that would become the second-tallest building in Chicago, a major step forward for a project imagined for years.

But despite the approval from the Chicago Plan Commission, the 1,422-foot building remains a highly speculative deal that may take years to realize. Its residential component, including condos and rentals, and its hotel all are vulnerable in an economy with continuing damage from the pandemic.

The official article, seems like it has a negative/doubtful undertone

This building already exists in Shenzhen with nearly the exact same specs, only it's a touch taller there at 1450'. It's called KK100, formerly known as Kingkey Finance Tower. I realize it's a tiny tiny tiny bit different (Shenzhen's closed the top... maybe there's the extra 28'?), but still feels like Chicago is copying China here. Kind of a sad fall after the originality of the John Hancock Building, Sears Tower, and later on the Trump International Hotel.

I guess the best I can say is that they are certainly copying one of the best buildings in China. Just seems an odd choice as by most measures the Shenzhen skyline (semi) recently surpassed Chicago's in the world rankings.
