Yeah smaller venues are great, People love spring training much more than regular MLB games.

Who cares? It benefits ASU as they get a free 20 million dollar upgraded NHL grade locker rooms and workout center.
Oh I really don't care. In fact I will likely try to go to a game or two just to see it. But it's gonna be funny to watch a pro hockey team in a 5k seat walk-in closet.

Well hoping this would get finalized and approved by end of year but looks like heading out for a referendum.

I wonder how much the City of Phoenix Aviation department will spend on mailers to Tempe residents trying to influence the vote.

Good as someone who lives in MAFW a spot next to a residential neighborhood is not somewhere an arena should be built. Built it at McClintock and Rio Salado or don't build it at all!

The problem with putting it out to a referendum is that you have people in South Tempe who wouldn't care about the adjoining incompatible uses either.

On the other hand, a referendum adds legitimacy to a Council decision. I was under the impression the neighborhood was politically powerful, so now that I think about it, it's surprising the Council has been throwing them under the bus like this.

They really should have put this in a better area. I also find it odd that Tempe has resorted to controversial GPLETs to get property developed on one side of the lake and getting into also controversial but much more massively complicated land deals on the other side. There has got to be a better way to fill some holes in the old Pier 202 and get something more interesting than the present compost heap.

I will be surprised if *anything* gets built at this rate.

Whether they will vote for Coyotes Arena sometime in 2023. It's up to the voters.

All told probably not a bad idea. They're trying to thread the needle between what the Coyotes want, their own needs, Sky Harbor, and threatened Goldwater Institute litigation, and having a voter stamp of approval would help. And I don't know if they will start with the remediation before voter approval, but the construction might not even be delayed if they are doing the remediation while they put together the referendum.

Goldwater Institute spoils all the fun. Anything to stave off those killjoys and curmudgeons.

So this was an interesting tidbit from the article:

Several big events and concerts are booked at the 18,000 seat venue, including Michael Jackson, Carrie Underwood and Rage Against the Machine.
I think its nice that they book concerts for dead people.

I'm guessing they meant past bookings but grammatically it sounded like MJ had an upcoming concert booked at the arena which would be...peculiar, to say the least.

I've seen Stevie Wonder and Bruce Springsteen at the Glendale arena and Rush several times at America West and my hearing is awful, but concerts in enclosed spaces make for awful and muffled acoustics. I'm also a cheapass and sit up in the rafters so maybe that's part of the problem.
