I believe you are correct. That area is called "the node" and is likely waiting for the central tunnel to be structurally complete. I'd expect to see it start going up in a month or two.

Maybe, just maybe…. After Southwest airlines meltdown (which is considered to be the worst in aviation history) they will switch to a more reliable hub system like all the other airlines… and then maybe, just maybe they pick SLC as a hub and it pushes up the timeline for concourse C and the trams so that we don’t have to wait 20-30 years.

Just wishful thinking… but hey!

Sorry to pour rain on the parade, but Southwest dominates Las Vegas Reid and has a pretty strong presence in Denver. Much more likely one of them would get the hypothetical "hub" status.

Of course, this coming from the guy (me) who dreams of us needing a second terminal facing northward toward the 2200 North road because we'll have the G and H concourses...

Yeah, not too likely with their established network in the region. Add PHX to the list above as well, basically Utah is landlocked by large Southwest airline "hubs". For flights Denver is 1, Las Vegas 3 and PHX 6th in their network.

A few notes from next week's SLCDA meeting.

  • The number of gates opening in May has increased from 4 to 5.
  • HDJV is aiming to start putting up steel for the node (current gap in B construction) on Febuary 20.
  • Contractor has started painting the ceiling of the Central Tunnel blue in preparation for installation of The River Tunnel.

SCE and Private Jets

Photo from the SLCDA slides that hasn't appeared on the progress photos yet, the first 5 gate portion of the South Concourse East is looking pretty close to complete for it's opening in may.

Second, the airport is anticipating so many private jets this weekend they are planning on using the general aviation runway and one of the deicing pads as Private Jet parking.

Wow! Excellent photo!

In about 90 more days left to go! The concourse A-East to set opened on May 16, 2023. Only 5 gates in the concourse A East.

Let the countdown begin!

Are they going to open all 17 at once or will they open up a section every few months. Also does the east wing only have 22 gates? The west wing has 25. It seems kind of weird that they would open everything but 3 gates at the end of the year….

It seems like everything about this has been ahead of schedule. I predict we have 5-10 more gates on top of the one’s opening in May by September.

I would assume all 17 at once. Here is the overall gate schedule through Phase 4. And yes, there are less gates on east wing than west.

New art "Gateway Sculpture"

Gordon Huether Studio has listed some new airport art on their website. A surprise for sure, the airport has certainly kept quiet on this.

Artwork description:
Quote:
The Gateway Sculpture is a momentous, monumental gateway for Salt Lake City International Airport that celebrates the natural beauty of Utah. It was created with specific reference to the adjacent Wasatch Mountain Range. The skin of each of the five sculptures has an abstracted graphic of the world map: the solid area representing the landmass and the expanded metal referencing the water of our oceans. A cast glass orb near the top of the tallest peak represents the geographical location of Utah and is our “You Are Here” moment. The tallest structure is 90 feet tall, or a 12-story building, and the smallest 40 feet tall. Predominately made of Weathering steel, the combined weight of the sculptures is approximately 75 tons.

That's pretty cool, talk about unique and eye-catching. Very excited for this, and glad that it's being built at a scale that will be impressive to see and noticeable for a long distance. Cool that they are also using what I assume is corten steel, which is the copper-colored steel used in landscaping, that weathers and changes color over time.
