Being a sports fan I could name all OHL teams, vast majority of WHL teams and half from the Q. Placing them on the map, other than from the O, would be a challenge for many of the places. But having been on SSP for three years, and learning a lot, my geography has greatly improved.

I have also worked in mortgage admin and underwriting since 2003. The first half was residential, but was assigned to regions, being SWO, cottage country from Simcoe through to Haliburton, and Atlantic. But it's not like I had any interest in these towns or had to look at a map.

Second half I've been in commercial. First 7 years though our portfolio was 95% Ontario, in the populated areas, with the odd place in BC, AB and QC. However, last 1.5 years at this newest job, it's everywhere, including the territories. And many times I have to look at a map to do a streetview of the place or it's in reports. So I've picked up a lot along the way. I know a lot more places now and way more suburbs of places than I would have imagined.

Anyway, prior to this experience, I could only name places like:

BC - Vic, Van, Kamloops, Kelowna, Vernon, Whistler, Nanaimo
AB - Cal, Edm, Red Deer, Lethbridge, Medicine Hat, Fort Mac, Banff, Lake Louise, Drumheller
SK - Reg, Sask, Swift Current, PA, Moose Jaw, Yorkton (Wendel Clark)
MB - Wpg, Brandon, Churchill, Flin Flon, Selkirk
QC - Mtl, QC, Sherbrook, Hull (at the time), Gaspe, TR, Rimouski, Asbestos, Chicoutimi, Shawinigan
ATL - Hali, Sydney, Yarmouth, Cape Breton, Dartmouth, Peggy's Cove, Monc, SJ, Freddy, Bathurst, Mirimachi, SJ, Cornerbrook, Lab. City, Charlottetown, Summerside

Just for fun, I asked my in-laws (average middle-aged québécois, who do not work in anything related to geography and did not have to look often at maps in their lives) to name the cities/towns they knew in every other province. Here it is, in the order they gave me the names:

NL: St. John's, L'Anse-aux-Meadows, Wabush
NS: Halifax, Chéticamp
PE: Charlottetown, Avonlea (!)
NB: Caraquet, Edmundston, Moncton, Tracadie, Miramichi, Shédiac, Campbellton
ON: Toronto, Ottawa, Sudbury, Kingston, Windsor
MB: Winnipeg, (St-Boniface)
SK: Saskatoon
AB: Edmonton, Calgary, Fort McMurray, Banff
BC: Vancouver, Victoria
Yukon: Whitehorse
Northwest Territories: Yellowknife
Nunavut: Iqaluit

Best post in the thread so far!

There is no Avonlea in PEI, but I suspect you knew that from the (!) you included in your post.

About what I'd expect. Maybe slightly above average for your average Québécois.

About exactly average Québécois IMO except for the clearly higher-than-average familiarity with Acadian NB.

Lake Superior is obviously Thunder Bay.

Sure, but it shouldn't count, any more than "that city in the middle of the prairie that's the capital of the province of Saskatchewan" should count as being able to name "Regina".

If you're aware of Thunder Bay then you'll know it as Thunder Bay. The only pass I'd consider would be for an old timer naming the city as either Fort Arthur or Port McWilliam.

I LOVE that he coud name *north* Sydney (and not Sydney) and *lower* Sackville
It also seems like your dad and my in-laws think of Alberta the same way.

North Sydney is where the ferry to Newfoundland runs from. The other Sydney is of no consequence.

Agreed.

Also "Vancouver Island" is obviously Victoria. But no points on the scoreboard for that either.

I'm glad you brought up Lake Superior. Back in June I was on the beach at the cottage on Georgian Bay. A group of maybe 14 were there. You could tell they rented a cottage for the week. There were about 7 adults and I could overhear everything they were saying. They were from Waterloo. One of them asked the other, what lake is this? The guy said Lake Superior. I always heard the water was clear up here (it was amazingly crystal clear this year at the beach from May to mid July). None of the other adults corrected him.

In reality they were on Tiny Beaches, 40 minutes north of Barrie.

I know lack of geographic awareness has come up many times on other threads, but this was recent and not a story I've mentioned before.
