^ Wow, I only breezed through that, but the design is incredible! I love the attention to context, and the continuation from "The Mews" just east.

Initially I didn't like 167 N Green because I thought it was too bulky, and then I was skeptical of 900 W Randolph because it felt too tall. But you throw this in the middle and now it looks like a perfectly proportioned 'second' downtown. Beautifully illustrated in the presentation:

Same is true with a lot of 'firsts' in a new neighborhood/city I suppose. Like Sears tower was and 432 Park in NYC before they built they other skinnies.

Still think that south building is to tall. At least do not make it the same darn height as the building to the east....just magnifies the wall effect of them both behind Randolph.

This is a fine example of thinking outside the box!

I don't know. The odd shape of the building moving away from Randolph on the South face will diminish the wall effect and actually point toward and help step up toward 900 W Randolph. There's going to be a wall to some extent if this site is developed to its fullest potential and I think they came up with a striking solution that compliments its surroundings.

Kinda bothers me that the plaza here doesn't line up with the "Mews" across the street. Oh well. Still pretty interesting.

The biggest offender is the Gensler monstrosity. 900 Randolph will feel like a fresh counterpoint to that thing probably, LOL.

I don't know, I like that it doesn't line up perfectly. Just a small jog to the right, I guess. I wonder if there will be a crosswalk at that location, that would be really good planning

Love those renderings! Especially the ones from below the tracks and from Randolph. I personally love this, and think it blends very well into the neighborhood.

Yes, a crosswalk with speed table is mentioned in the PDF. But this is also the kind of thing that requires special buy-in from the alderman, CDOT, etc and if even one business owner complains it’s probably DOA sadly.

For some reason architects love lining shit up like that because "Contextualism, continuing this datum line, blah blah...."

My guess is that’s how it’s done in Paris, and every architect secretly wants to Paris-ify their city.

Or the trend was born out of a need to justify decisions to irrational NIMBYs. Somehow being contextual has become the only way to keep their complaints at bay. Instead of, say, good design.

That said, I still think this building does contextualism well. Though it's probably the activated walkway that really pushes it over the edge. They could have done the massing better perhaps. Option 3 in their massing studies would have worked pretty well, perhaps a little better from a purely aesthetic POV.

As a green industry professional, I don't envy the contactor who will be tasked with growing trees in that "lightwell."
