Sven, Queens’ Second-Tallest Skyscraper, Tops Out At 29-37 41st Avenue In Long Island City
Quote:
Construction has topped out on Queens Plaza Park, aka Sven, a 762-foot-tall mixed-use skyscraper at 29-37 41st Avenue in Long Island City. Designed by Handel Architects for The Durst Organization, the 67-story tower now stands as the second-tallest building in Queens.
The project team also includes Selldorf Architects as the interior designer, Hunter Roberts as the general contractor, and Jaros, Baum & Bolles Engineering is handling required mechanical systems.
When complete, the building will comprise 50,000 square feet of lower-level office and retail space with 958 rental units above. The Durst Organization has also confirmed that the residential component will include 300 affordable homes. Amenity spaces will include an outdoor pool, a 20,000 square foot gym, a library, co-working areas, a kids’ playroom, and a demonstration kitchen.
With a focus on energy performance, the building is designed to achieve LEED certification, in line with New York City-funded initiatives to reduce the city’s reliance on fossil fuels.
The structure partially incorporates a landmarked clock tower that dates back to the late 1920s and originally housed the Bank of Manhattan. To best accommodate the clock tower, Handel Architects designed the structure with a concave glass façade that partially surrounds the historic building.
To date, the development is expected to debut in 2021.
