Largest Ferris wheel nears completion in Las Vegas

Source: http://www.ksl.com/?sid=26780969&nid...&s_cid=queue-1

The madcap carnival on the Las Vegas Strip is getting another over-the-top addition: the world's largest Ferris wheel.

The outer wheel of the 55-story High Roller ride is scheduled to be hoisted into place Monday. The gargantuan project is now visible from all over the city, including the airport. Early next year, it will be outfitted with 1,500 LED lights, and start its slow spin.

"It's going to be an icon," Project Director David Codiga said. "It's going to be a part of your visit to Las Vegas if you ride it or not. It's more or less impossible not to see it if you come here."

Caesars Entertainment Corp., which owns more casinos than any other U.S. gambling company, is building the ride as part of its $550 million Linq development, a new outdoor plaza across the street from Caesars Palace.

The walking mall, sandwiched between the Flamingo and Harrah's hotel-casino, is expected to open this winter. It's designed to lure Gen Xers and millennials, demographics Caesars believes will contribute a majority of Sin City tourist dollars by 2015.

City after city has jumped to put a new spin on the classic carnival attraction over the past decade.

The High Roller will be 100 feet taller than the London Eye, which opened in 2000, 30 feet taller than China's Star of Nanchang, which opened in 2006, and 9 feet taller than the Singapore Flyer, which opened in 2008.

These giant urban Ferris wheels typically transport riders in large, fixed capsules instead of the smaller, teetering baskets most people remember from childhood.

High Roller riders will have to take a break from gambling and smoking when they enter one of the 28 glass capsules attached to the gargantuan wheel, Codiga said, but they will be able to take in the marquee-lit panoramic views with a drink in hand.

The wheel, which has been under construction since 2011, is taller than the Bellagio hotel-casino but still dwarfed by the Stratosphere observation tower, which rises more than 1,000 feet. It will carry 3.5 million pounds of steel – the equivalent of about 200 Hummers_ and will take 30 minutes to make one revolution.

And, because this is Las Vegas where overstimulation is the sales pitch, it will feature audiovisual shows in each 40-person pod designed to complement the views.

Codiga, who previously worked for the theme park company Universal Studios, said he doesn't want visitors to get bored as the ride ascends and descends.

Tickets will be comparable to the London ride, which costs about $30, according to Caesars spokeswoman Christina Karas. She declined to say to how much it cost to build the ride.

The High Roller is not the only big wheel jostling for a place among the volcanoes and dancing fountains of the tourist corridor.

A rival company is building SkyVue, a 500-foot observation wheel across from Mandalay Bay at the southern end of the Strip that will feature video screens broadcasting ads. That project is expected to open in mid-2015, according to developer David Gaffin.

Last spring, a group of developers revealed plans for a third wheel – the London Thrill – near the CityCenter complex in the middle of the Strip.

The High Roller will also likely have to surrender its tallest in the world title before long. Another monster wheel is looming in New York City, where Mayor Michael Bloomberg announced plans last year for a 625-foot ride on Staten Island's waterfront.

Other wheels may grow taller, Codiga said, "but the High Roller will allow you to float over Las Vegas."

North Las Vegas’ Craig Ranch Regional Park is finally ready for visitors.

After more than 10 years, three mayors, two city financial emergencies and several delays, the embattled 120-acre park is scheduled to open Friday. The park, which was transformed from the Craig Ranch Golf Course, was designed with the input of more than 1,000 residents to be the crown jewel of North Las Vegas.

There are large fields of grass and trees, ponds, a skate park, four playgrounds, athletic fields and public gardens. The park is large enough to have its own microclimate, and it has plenty of activities to keep visitors from every age group occupied, North Las Vegas Parks and Recreation Deputy Director Mike Henley said.

The city projects the park, at 628 W. Craig Road, to draw 750,000 people from North Las Vegas and across the Las Vegas Valley and, as a result, for the park to be an economic boost to nearby businesses and home values.

The Downtown Grand - Downtown Las Vegas' newest resort opens

The Downtown Grand - Downtown Las Vegas' newest resort opens

Quote:
By CHRIS SIEROTY
LAS VEGAS REVIEW-JOURNAL
October 27, 2013

"The price of the renovation, redesign and transformation of the Lady Luck into the Downtown Grand alone was about $100 million. The Downtown Grand at 3rd Street and Ogden Avenue will hire 800 employees.

The Downtown Grand features 634 rooms, about 600 slot machines and 30 table games.

“This has been three years in the making,” said Schorr, CEO of Downtown Grand. “We’ve created nearly 800 jobs. That’s a dramatic impact on the Las Vegas economy.”

Schorr described the Downtown Grand as an “urban hospitality experience.” As for opening on the same weekend as the Life is Beautiful festival, Schorr called it “great timing.”

Schorr said the Downtown Grand will host a ribbon cutting ceremony on Nov. 12.

Situated on the corner of Stewart and Ogden avenues, Downtown Grand is the anchor of Downtown3rd, an entertainment district that is home to restaurants and bars, including Triple George Grill.

Downtown Grand includes an 18-story Casino Tower and a 25-story Grand Tower. The exterior of the hotel casino blends multiple storefronts with brick and granite facades and includes a variety of indoor and outdoor experience, including a William Hill sports betting window.

Schorr said the design of the casino was to get away from the typical design found on the Strip. Those designs encourage guests to never leave the building by providing every amenity.

Downtown Grand was built to encourage guests to leave the building and walk around downtown Las Vegas. That means there are a number of doors to go in and out of the casino.

“We took a different approach,” Schorr said. “Guests don’t have to walk through the casino to get to a restaurant. There are indoor and outdoor spaces. There is even outdoor gaming.”

Lake Las Vegas casino shuts over lease issues

Lake Las Vegas casino shuts over lease issues

Quote:
Las Vegas Sun
Tuesday, Oct. 29, 2013
A casino in the master-planned Lake Las Vegas community has closed its doors over lease issues two years after making a comeback from a previous shutdown.

Mike Lawton of the Nevada Gaming Control Board said Tuesday his agency was been notified of Casino MonteLago's closure, but hasn't been told whether it's permanent or temporary.

Casino general manager Marcus Suan issued a statement calling the closure unfortunate and says the business is hopeful the issues will be resolved soon.

The property previously closed March 14, 2010, after struggling during the recession, and remained dark until May of the next year.

Casino MonteLago features slot machines, electronic table games and a restaurant called Harry's.

New Details On The Coming Resorts World Las Vegas
Vegas Chatter
October 30, 2013

Resorts World, the new mega-resort complex set for the site of the failed Echelon project, should commence construction by June 2014, with an opening sometime in 2016.

While we wait for things to kick into gear, new filings with local zoning officials are providing added insight into what to expect. We've already known the project will be inspired by a "Forbidden City" design and will feature multiple towers (four ranging from 44-57 stories) in a complex not dissimilar to CityCenter. Now we know those towers will offer a combined 6,583 hotel rooms, 22 VIP villas, and 43 Aqua Suites. We don't even know what Aqua Suites are, but we so want to stay in one!
There's is also additional information about the resort and renderings on the link

Shovels won't hit the dirt until April 2014, however, the first renderings of the $350 million dollar structure were released today. It will host everything you'd expect a stadium to host, from sports matches and concerts to award productions.

The tilted turns are unusual because they tilt in the opposite direction of the turn. Most coaster enthusiasts are used to banked curves and coasters that tilt in the direction of the turn. On a left hand turn on El Loco, the coaster tilts to the right, producing the sensation of being tossed out of the ride.

Rohwer said the open carriage adds to the experience. It holds four people, two in front and two in back. Its small size allows the vehicle a tighter turning radius on curves.

Tropicana Wants To Flip The (Strip) Script, Too
November 21, 2013

The new, new Tropicana is taking a page from the current playbook being passed around The Strip, adding shops, dining and retail to the front of its facade. Being called, The Shops at the new Tropicana Las Vegas, a three-level building spanning just over 311,000 square feet will replace what is now, as no one will disagree, a whole lot of wasted space in front of the hotel-casino at the corner of Las Vegas Boulevard and Tropicana.

A privately funded $1.3 billion arena with a retractable roof has been proposed at the former Wet 'n' Wild site on the Strip.

Former UNLV and NBA player Jackie Robinson, a Las Vegas businessman, announced today plans to break ground next year on the 22,000-seat arena that could house basketball, hockey, boxing, rodeos and concerts.

No tenants have been signed for the arena, but Robinson has ties to the NBA and has interest in bringing a team to Las Vegas. He said the arena would be large enough to play host to NCAA regional basketball tournaments.

Developers have tentatively named the project the All Net Arena and Resort, and the project would include a high-end resort with a spa. A promenade called Victory Plaza would lead visitors from Las Vegas Boulevard past lush landscaping and water features to a restaurant, nightclub, wedding chapel and retail amenities as well as the arena.

The four-level arena would include 75 luxury boxes: 25 1,000-square-foot executive suites and 50 500-square-foot corporate suites.

The retractable roof would enable the arena to host traditionally outdoor events such as tennis matches and rodeos, or indoor sports such as basketball and hockey.

The 862,500-square-foot arena would be built on 27 acres between the yet-to-open SLS Las Vegas and the dormant Fontainebleau project site.

Over the next six months, a national stadium consulting firm will conduct local surveys and financial analyses to determine the facility needs and economic feasibility of a new UNLV football stadium.

Last month, the university’s Campus Improvement Authority Board hired Conventions, Sports and Leisure International to help board members determine the size, amenities and financial plan for an on-campus football and events stadium, to be built near Harmon Avenue and Swenson Street. The $325,000 contract is expected to receive final approval next week by the Nevada Board of Examiners.

CSL International – a Plano, Texas-based stadium planning and management firm – is a subsidiary of Legends, a sports management company whose clients include the Dallas Cowboys and New York Yankees. CSL International says it has conducted more than 1,000 feasibility studies for professional and collegiate stadiums across the country, helping plan or manage 75 percent of all major stadiums in the country over the past 15 years.

As project manager, CSL International will conduct focus groups and surveys, and come up with multiple scenarios for the UNLV stadium board to consider.

With an eye on opening the venue in 2016, MGM Resorts International received approval from the county Wednesday for the first round of permits and reviews needed to begin construction on an arena.

The Clark County Commission unanimously approved use permits for the planned 20,000-seat arena and the restaurants, retail space and park that will accompany the development.

Planning documents filed with the county show the project, with an estimated price tag of $350 million, will include a 640,000-square-foot sports and entertainment arena, plus another 80,000 square feet for the outdoor shopping center. A 10-acre park area will serve as an entryway into the arena complex, which will be located behind the New York-New York and Monte Carlo casinos.

Commissioners enthusiastically endorsed the proposal, calling the 3,000 permanent jobs it’s expected to create “good news” for a region still struggling with high unemployment.

Harley-Davidson Hits The Strip

Quote:
Harly Davidson fans won't have to cruise off the Strip much longer to visit their favorite local dealership. Las Vegas Harley-Davidson just broke ground on a new location near the Welcome to Las Vegas sign. Meaning the roar of Harleys will drown out any complaints about those Welcome Sign solar panels.

The 50,000-square-foot spot will bring Harley's local location count to three and will include a dealership, motorcycle rentals and retail store.

Impossible to miss, the High Roller observation wheel is getting all the attention these days, and its adjoining pathway of restaurants, bars and shops—the Linq—will open new stuff in a matter of days. But another development is taking shape on the south Strip, changing the face of two well-known casino-resorts.

The Brooklyn Bridge at New York-New York is all new, its water replaced by white brick and cobblestone walkways. Construction is moving quickly on Hershey’s Chocolate World, set to open in the spring. A charming new patio for the Nine Fine Irishmen pub is up and running, and so are gift shop Stupid Idiotic, Swatch and Starbucks, all of them pulling traffic from Las Vegas Boulevard into the casino.

An empty lot running along the access street between NY-NY and Monte Carlo will be the site of Las Vegas’ first Shake Shack hamburger joint and other shops leading back to MGM Resorts’ planned $350 million arena, which will break ground this summer. Across that street, Monte Carlo’s Strip frontage has been remade so it feels less like Monaco and more like a park in a mountain town, thanks to pine tree-topped, rock-covered fountains. The boisterous Diablo’s Cantina will soon be joined by ice cream at BLVD Creamery, coffee at Sambalatte, pizza at 800 Degrees, hip Japanese cuisine at Yusho and saloon-style antics at Double Barrel Roadhouse, set to open March 7.

Standing under scaffolding and in the rubble of a dust-strewn construction site 11 stories high above the Strip, one worries that there is no possible way it will all be transformed perfectly for a Memorial Day Weekend opening.

But nightlife czar Victor Drai promises me that he’ll be right on schedule: “We’re right on target with everything — 80 days to go, and it will then be the most beautiful nightclub you have ever seen.”

Now “the King of Clubs” is taking on the challenge of building his own hotspot, which will be even larger than XS — and it will be the only rooftop dual-floor dayclub and nightclub on the Strip. It’s a 65,000-square-foot double venue split over two levels at the new Cromwell hotel transformed from Bill’s Gamblin’ Hall & Saloon and before that the Barbary Coast.

The club’s cost is reportedly at $100 million, and the pools will require 59,466 gallons of water. It will open at the first standalone boutique hotel on the Strip with its 188 suites on Memorial Day Weekend that starts Friday, May 23.
