Some pictures from Monday night's near sellout of Avenir Centre (over 8,500) in Moncton for the first pre-tournament game between Team Canada and the Swiss (6-0).

Good guess. TV broadcast said just north of 4400.

Enjoy the game! I'll be heading into town for the Lat/USA game.

OTE]

In many countries 2 tea,ms far from home would draw 2 or 300 people.

Watching on TV the Avenir centre looks great. Looks just like an NHL arena. Pretty cool to see

Not really the case these days. When FIN/SUI played in Trinec, Czechia in 2019 they had 1,573. That tournament averaged 5.5K and never had a crowd below 1K.

In 2015 in Finland, aside from the relegation games, the smallest crowd was 1.4K and the tournament averaged 7.7K.

You have to go back to Malmo 2014 to find games with that few people, and even then they were still getting 10K+ out for Sweden and knockout round games.

The notion that this tournament draws nobody in Europe is definitely an outdated one from over a decade ago. It'll be in Gothenburg next year and Norway have made it in so they'll be sending a few folks.

What I like about this tournament this year is that the games are hosted in junior hockey markets and in junior rinks. I applaud the City of Moncton and Halifax on hosting the tournament. Plus yesterday when I was at the Latvia V USA game i was shaking my head and saying to myself I am at a World juniors game on Boxing Day and how cool was that.

6-3 Slovakia over the USA. Who would have thunk it. Anything can happen in this tournament.

Great game. Nice atmosphere in the arena.

I wonder if any of the players have skated on the oval on their time off? I haven't seen a lot of feed back on this great outdoor venue!

I don't believe this. The rink capacity for hockey is 8800. There was no more than 1000 empty seats. I would say attendance was 7800.

I suppose the 6438 could be paying customers, with over 1000 assorted hangers on (team officials, tournament officials, media, non participating players etc) filling up the place.

I mean, you can't really just conjure up a number that you like more lol. Official numbers are official for a reason - tickets sold. Things like team staff (and players) are not included, nor are tournament officials generally.

Those TSN aerial flybys are nice looking for sure. I'm assuming our very own Infinity Aerials has been contracted to do this work.

I was just giving the attendance from the tournament site. Overall Moncton has been drawing good crowds considering that the Canadian team is playing their games in Halifax.

Attendance numbers are sometimes the number of tickets sold, and sometimes the number of tickets scanned at the doors. The method used varies unfortunately.

As for today's game, Ticketmaster only had single seats remaining when I checked late-morning, which would imply tickets sold were above 8500.

At the game there were a lot of empty seats between the bluelines, where it's virtually all tournament pass holders (many obviously won't attend every game especially one on a workday at 5pm). My attendance guess was 7000, so if 6438 is legit, then it's surely the number of people through the doors, not the number of tickets sold.

I've seen world junior games elsewhere where we could easily count the number of fans during a TV timeout.... and the number was always a fraction of what ended up being announced.

Neither method captures people working at the arena, as MonctonRad has attempted to include to inflate numbers.

Do you have any proof that it's one method over the other?

Probably because they were tickets sold and/or distributed, as they are with the vast majority of sporting events. Moncton's figures are likely tickets sold/distributed.
