It will also be interesting to see if its streetscape can stitch back to the humane corner of the Aztec Theater after that stark corner of the Canopy.
When'd they add those lights to the Canopy? I kinda like it, it's different. Hopefully they do end up lighting the crown piece on the Floodgate.

I'm still confused about the facade color on this one lol. Is it going to be white panels with glass windows or all glass?

Speaking of the Canopy, the Canopy could use a canopy.

If any architects who own the damned building are skowering about, please add this. It's so dull and plain in design. It needs a crown and some sort of lighting rig to give it the personality fitting of a Riverwalk building.

Well I was just suggesting a sidewalk canopy like the Aztec across the street. It would be a pedestrian amenity and give the base of the building a more human scale. But your ideas sound good too.

Yeah, this building looks great from most other angles, but that Commerce corner is grim. At least the garbage can is gone -_-

Surprised they didn't add a mural or something. Almost anything would be better than a blank concrete wall.

I respectfully disagree on the mural. I think they're kinda cheesy. Even some thoughtful brickwork would have been better. But the main problem is the poor design choice of putting that staircase in the corner in the first place. I realize it's a small piece of property, but a better architect would have come up with a better design.

I wish the floodgate were a 400' tower. Would be such a cool design to see towering above the rest of the buildings

Agreed, not the biggest fan of murals either but that concrete strip is an eyesore. At least on street level. I'm not sure why they didn't make the whole building 1 or 2 colors instead of adding that.

Same. It's a really unique design that would have added a lot to the skyline. Oh well happy it's getting built at all lol.

The architect is from the school of Accidental Brutalism.

Thanks for the photos, babysal. The renderings show it more white. Is there facade work to come, or are the renderings just not exact?

It is not done. This building belongs in Miami not San Antonio.

Hopefully this is the design direction we can see alot more in San Antonio though.

Agreed. Would rather see residential towers designed more like this here than the Austin/Vancouver glass boxes.

Actually, I think San Antonio would look better with some glass. I don't say that because of a bias since Austin does have tons of it now, but rather because I'd rather not see a bunch of modern buildings pretending to be old and trying to fit in San Antonio and only ending up upstaging San Antonio's old stock. To me, that's more disrespectful to that era than glass is. There's also the bonus of glass reflecting those old facades and making for some cool sightlines, even giving you a view of it in reflection before you walk around the corner and see it. One city that I think of in this instance is Kansas City where they have a lot of old skyscrapers and also new glass towers.

If any place needs some that look old like the one above in Chicago, it's Austin, since we have so few of them. We only have two buildings taller than 300 feet that were built before the 1940s. The Texas Capitol and the University of Texas Tower. And we have no 200 footers that were built before the 1960s.

The Floodgate is a really unique design, definitely modern, and definitely not an homage to anything even resembling "old". It reminds me more of The Independent in Austin than it it reminds me of anything else in San Antonio. I do think it fits in, and it's not without its nod to say, the Tower Life Building.
