It's a well kept secret that this portion of the Petitcodiac around Pres d'en Haut (in Memramcook) is a lot like the Annapolis Valley on the other side of the Bay of Fundy, complete with orchards and vineyards.

Yesterday we went for (I believe) our first significant hike of the year. There are three new sections of the East Coast trail wrapping around the west side of the Northeast Avalon:



The red section is Bauline to Cape St. Francis, we did that last year. The white section is Conception Bay South (specifically Topsail) to Portugal Cove, which is the last section we have to do.

The yellow section is from Portugal Cove to Bauline. That's the one we did yesterday. It was truly insane - lots of stretches like a normal East Coast Trail with wooden stairs and steep inclines, but this one had about 2.5 hours total of, basically, rock climbing. It was the most vertigo-inducing, terrifying stretch of trail I've yet done here. Doesn't come across in pictures but they weren't kidding in the trail guide when they stressed assuring your footing with every step. I'm glad to have done it once, but I'll never do it again. Coming down into Bauline was the worst, so I would be willing to hike in from the Portugal Cove side to the waterfall, and then back out the same way.

Anyhow, some scenes!

We started, of course, in Portugal Cove, like good Catholics This is where the two ferries to nearby Bell Island dock, shuttling back and forth constantly between the two, passing each other in the middle of the tickle, all day, every day. Wabana is the main (only?) town on Bell island.

Thanksgiving long weekend provided for a nice opportunity to head over to Ucluelet on the Pacific coast to relax and enjoy some good food.







Enjoying dinner at the Black Rock Resort.







Wild Pacific Trail is a must-do trail whenever in Ucluelet. The trail is also stroller friendly.







It was a misty morning with fog pushing in from the sea.











Thornton Creek Hatchery was open this time and we were hoping to see some black bears trying to catch salmon.







Unfortunately the salmon run had not yet started due to low water levels, so we only saw some fish and no bears.







Thanksgiving dinner at our hotel was tasty.







Next day we checked out how busy Chesterman Beach was.











It was a great and relaxing weekend with nothing special going on, although the west coast itself is plenty special on its own.

I was in Ucluelet for a couple of days back in September and it is indeed a neat place - I preferred it to Tofino. The drive in on Highway 4 is something else though, but I think that is what makes the area feel so remote / undiscovered even though its only ~60km as the crow flies from Port Alberni.

I preferred Ucluelet as well. Mind you it was a number of years back.
