F.N.B. Corp. to Occupy 160,000 SF at New Office Tower

- F.N.B. Corporation, the parent company of First National Bank and the Pittsburgh Penguins, will serve as the anchor tenant for FNB Financial Center in Downtown Pittsburgh.

- The firm will occupy more than 160,000 square feet of space at the new 24-story mixed-use tower to be developed by Buccini/Pollin Group at the corner of Washington Place and Bedford Avenue in the historic Lower Hill District. The offices at the FNB Financial Center will serve as the corporate headquarters for F.N.B. Corp.

- BPG’s Managing Partner Chris Buccini called the project, which will add prominently to the city’s skyline as one of the city’s 20 tallest buildings, “one of the most significant projects in our company’s history.”

- BPG plans to build the roughly 400-foot-high, 500,000-square-foot tower on about 1.25 acres of existing parking lots near PPG Paints Arena. The bottom floors of the tower will feature retail shopping and other amenities, and a public parking garage will be connected to the project.

- The architectural design is being done by Gensler, a firm based in Philadelphia, officials reported. Gensler’s concept for the tower utilizes glass and crisp angles to integrate the large structure into the skyline, officials said.

- While still conceptual, developers are planning 60,000 square feet of public open space between Washington Place and Logan Street that will offer views of Pittsburgh’s landmarks. Those spaces are planned to take advantage of crowds that arrive for Penguins games and other events.

- The tower is the first piece of a 28-acre, $350 million redevelopment plan in what’s known as the Lower Hill District. An adjacent 300-unit multifamily development, live music venue, and parking garage are also in the works along with retail and more.

- Developers expect final municipal approvals for the tower project in the next six to nine months, at which time they will break ground. Construction is expected to take about two years and create more than 1,000 construction jobs.

- Completion of FNB Financial Center is anticipated in 2022. FNB was advised in this transaction by JLL and Colliers International. JLL also advised the development team.

Amazing! I'm always happy when a city like Pittsburgh sees a new tower proposal. Considering there was uncertainty whether there would be any towers of substantial height in the Lower Hill District redevelopment, let our fears be eased, eh? Also, this announcement of a headquarters in Pittsburgh coming right after an even larger HQ announcement in Cleveland (Sherwin-Williams), well, imagine being a skyscraper fan in the greater NE Ohio/Western PA region right now! ..or even someone concerned about new high-wage jobs in a beleaguered part of the US, for that matter

Proposals of any significant height in Pittsburgh have been few and far between for the past 30! years.

Nice! I always liked Pittsburg. It has gorgeous old buildings and very good cultural institutions for a city of its size. I like it much better than popular Sunbelt cities like Atlanta, Charlotte, Nashville, etc.

The best thing about this building is the prominent balance it will provide to the skyline when viewed from pretty much anywhere, but mainly from anywhere but west. From all other directions, the US Steel Building sticks out like a sore thumb... and from the south, there's such a drastic cutoff of height due to the line up of towers on Grant St.

This is great for Pittsburgh, even if the new design appears to be watered-down. Even still, this will definitely add a bit of a modern touch to a skyline that hasn't really added anything significant since the 1980's. Although, I haven't seen how this building fits into the skyline.

Yeah, the design is obviously nothing too stunning. But it is modern and glassy, which will especially help it stand out in this location.

PNC Tower (2015) is certainly significant for Pittsburgh's skyline though. Not only for its 550' height (I think it's somewhere around that... the height nerds can feel free to correct me ), but also because it filled a significant gap in the middle of the downtown triangle.

The FNB Tower should actually appear 500'+ on the skyline because it it being built on the Lower Hill, at a higher elevation than the downtown buildings. The site is in the middle-right of the below photo.

Will its location make it look even taller than a 400ft'er? Isn't the old Civic Arena location at a higher elevation than the rest of the downtown area?

The street grid is new and was constructed to mimic the urban street grid lost with 1950s urban renewal and civic arena construction. The development is an attempt to reconnect a dissected Hill District / Downtown.

Curiously, it says "The goal is to break ground for the anchor tenant, First National Bank’s 26-story tower, between April and June of next year", instead of 24-story. I wonder if there really has been a height bump.

Great news for Pittsburgh. Downtown is constraint geographically, the natural expansion should be eastward. Hopeful this will spur more development of the lower Hill.

The exact height has finally been announced: 418 ft. See Pittsburgh's URA, SEA boards approve project at former Civic Arena site. It will be the city's 16th tallest.

Construction should start real soon.

Penguins development team schedules groundbreaking for new FNB Financial Center

The development team of the Pittsburgh Penguins, which includes Buccini/Pollin Group, investment partner Clay Cove Capital LLC, the architecture firm Gensler and the real estate firm JLL, has scheduled a groundbreaking event on the site for the new 26-story FNB Financial Center on Sept. 1 at 11:00 a.m.
