I’m confused. Are there two separate hotel tower proposals: one at 60th and Dorchester and one at 60th and Woodlawn (as in that rendering) or is this the same project that just moved sites?

I'm almost certain this is the same project - originally, it may have been planned at Dorchester at 60th, but I believe it was move west, adjacent to the now under construction Rubenstein Forum, to provide a direct path between the two.

Looking forward to walking around Hyde Park next summer with all these new developments

Although I did like the design of the earlier proposal more, hopefully this means they don't tear down the Hyde Park Day School buildings.

Just saw Manual Cinema's Frankestein at Court Theater this weekend. Holy shit was that amazing, they literally make film live using overhead projectors, live music, and cameras. I recommend all of you see anything of theirs when they are in town.

Anyways, University of Chicago is such a gem. The architecture there is possibly the best collection in such a small area on earth. It seems everything they build only adds to it. What an exciting part of town for people who are into design. I've been there dozens of times, but every time I go back it's even more impressive. Can't wait to see the latest round of additions completed!

The transformation of 53rd over the past couple of years has been beyond belief. There is a site just east of 1600 E 53rd that has a lot of potential for development and with the proximity to the Metra it must on the radar of developers if there isn’t a discussion taking place already. I’m also curious how the Harper court expansion will impact the neighborhood along with UofC expanding their undergrad population by around 2k. Although UofC claims they want students living on campus or in woodlawn.

Might be the best SCB building going up right now, maybe even better than the Paragon.

SCB has certainly grown over time as a firm haven't they?

Let's not go crazy now...

But yeah, this tower is really nice, and I really always thought it would make a nice addition to HP, especially after the redesign

They actually started in the 1960s doing many of the towers along North LSD. Some of those were kinda good, in a kitschy way.

They literally exist to do lakefront highrises in Chicago, but whenever there’s a big boom their buildings tend to get repetitive. Seems like in this case the client demanded better.

Didn't SCB design the Legacy? Or am I wrong?

I love that building.

So is the 53rd base not rounded? IIRC, that was an improvement on an earlier rendering.

Yes it's by far their best work, however they have cranked out a lot of mediocre junk over the years and their recent output seems to be consistently better. It's almost like the success of Legacy caused them up their efforts ever since.

The square corner probably saved money and gave them an extra 3 parking spots.

I believe you are talking about 1644 E 53rd? It was recently purchased by Silliman group and I think they only plan to give the existing shopping center a face-lift and sidewalk improvements.
