Revving up to be an 'airport city'
China Daily Excerpt
Aug 5, 2022

The opening of the third runway at Hong Kong International Airport last month will ease bottlenecks in its capacity limitations, offering a silver lining to the aviation sector disrupted by the COVID-19 pandemic, and helping to consolidate Hong Kong's status as a global aviation hub, industry experts say.

The new 3,800-meter-long, 60-meter-wide runway is part of the three-runway-system project, which started construction in August 2016, with total costs estimated at HK$141.5 billion ($18.14 billion).

The mega project also includes the expansion of Terminal 2, the building of a new T2 concourse, an automated people mover system and a high-speed baggage handling system. The entire project is due to be completed by 2024.

The expanded airport will be able to handle 120 million passengers and 10 million metric tons of cargo annually when it's fully operational. This would strengthen Hong Kong's status as an international aviation hub, as outlined in the 14th Five-Year Plan (2021-25).

Former chief executive of the special administrative region Carrie Lam Cheng Yuet-ngor charted the course for Hong Kong's aviation development in her 2021 policy address, highlighting the importance of the three-runway-system project in the city's bid to become a global aviation hub.

Hong Kong Needs Clear Roadmap to End Quarantine, Cathay Says
Bloomberg Excerpt
Aug 8, 2022

Hong Kong should urgently provide a clear roadmap for the complete removal of all Covid-19 travel restrictions, the city’s main carrier Cathay Pacific Airways Ltd. said Monday.

The airline’s statement followed the government saying it will cut mandatory hotel quarantine to three days from a week, effective Aug. 12. Cathay described the move as a positive step, yet it still leaves Hong Kong more closed off than other places -- beyond mainland China -- that have dropped most curbs on travel and allow much freer movement. A clear plan to lift all restrictions is needed to protect Hong Kong’s status as an aviation hub, the airline said.

Hong Kong’s policies on travel, including quarantine of as long as 21 days earlier in the crisis, decimated air traffic in and out of the city and saddled Cathay with over HK$24 billion ($3 billion) in losses.

Cathay said last month it plans to operate 25% of its pre-virus passenger capacity by the end of the year, up from below 2% in the depths of the pandemic. Rival Singapore Airlines Ltd. -- operating under more supportive travel policies -- has said it will hit 81% around then.

Hong Kong’s Cathay Pacific Airways posts loss of nearly HK$5 billion for first half of 2022, as firm warns city is ‘far behind’ other aviation hubs
South China Morning Post Excerpt
Aug 10, 2022

Hong Kong’s Cathay Pacific Airways has announced a loss of HK$4.99 billion (US$636.8 million) for the first half of 2022, 33.9 per cent down from the same period last year amid a strong rebound in passenger flights.

The figure, which is smaller than the HK$7.56 billion loss recorded in the first six months of 2021, was released as the city’s flagship carrier on Wednesday warned that Hong Kong had fallen “far behind” other international aviation hubs.

Cathay chairman Patrick Healy said the city’s strict anti-epidemic travel measures for aircrews were the “single biggest impediment” to the company’s plans to operate more flights.

Cathay Pacific to gradually increase capacity after crew quarantine rules lifted
Excerpt

Sept 10 (Reuters) - Cathay Pacific Airways Ltd (0293.HK) said it would gradually increase flying capacity in the coming months after the Hong Kong government on Friday lifted rules requiring passenger crew to quarantine in a hotel for three days on return to the city.

The onerous crew quarantine rules had made rostering difficult and were a major impediment to the airline returning to more normal operations.

Cathay's passenger capacity was at just 12.4% of pre-pandemic levels in the month of July, although its cargo capacity was at 51% in part because cargo crews were no longer required to quarantine.

Rush to Book Flights Jams Hong Kong Budget Airline’s Website
Bloomberg Excerpt
Sept 23, 2022

The website of Cathay Pacific Airways Ltd.’s low-cost airline was inundated with flight searches Friday, as wannabe travelers rushed to take advantage of an easing of pandemic travel restrictions across parts of Asia.

“Our website is busy due to the high traffic, which may cause longer time in flight search, booking, or receiving itinerary emails,” HK Express said in a pop-up message on its website. A spokeswoman for the airline said the notice was posted after Japan announced it would abolish Covid border controls.

Japan plans to ease restrictions on tourists entering the country, while Hong Kong is expected to make an announcement on its contentious quarantine regime later Friday.

World's longest airside bridge ready for use at Hong Kong airport
The Standard Excerpt
Nov 1, 2022

A Sky Bridge connecting the Hong Kong International Airport's Terminal 1 and the North Satellite Concourse is now ready for use.

At 200 meters long, the Sky Bridge will be the world's longest air-side bridge. At 28 meters high, it will allow the largest passenger aircraft - the A380 - to pass underneath.

An observation deck and restaurants were set up at both ends of the bridge. The floor is partly made of glass, allowing people to see planes passing through underneath the bridge.

The brand-new bridge is also expected to offer passengers tarmac views - including the third runway at the airport.

Ricky Leung Wing-kee, executive director of engineering and technology for the Airport Authority, said it usually takes passengers 20 minutes to take shuttle buses to their planes.

Passenger Traffic at HKIA Continues to Pick Up in October
Press Release Excerpt
Nov 11, 2022

Airport Authority Hong Kong (AAHK) today announced the air traffic figures of Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA) for October 2022. During the month, passenger throughput at HKIA reached 755,000, representing a surge of 447.9% over the same period last year. Passenger volume in October 2022 returned to around 13% of pre-pandemic levels. Cargo throughput and flight movements declined year on year by 23.9% and 10.2% to 351,000 tonnes and 12,575, respectively.

The growth in passenger throughput was mainly driven by increases in both Hong Kong resident and visitor traffic due to the relaxation of local quarantine measures. Passenger traffic to and from Southeast Asia experienced the most significant increase.

Cargo volume continued to be affected by global economic uncertainties, on-going geopolitical tensions and disruptions to global supply chains. Exports and imports decreased by 26.0% and 29.0% respectively, compared to the same month last year. Cargo traffic to and from North America registered the most significant decrease.

Cathay CEO Outlines Rebuild With Profit in Sight This Year
Bloomberg Excerpt
March 15, 2023

After being hit during the pandemic harder than pretty much any airline still flying, Cathay Pacific Airways Ltd. has a very good chance of posting a net profit this year and returning to full capacity in 2024, according to Chief Executive Officer Ronald Lam.

Covid-related disruption had such an impact on Hong Kong air travel that on one day in March last year, Cathay flew just 58 passengers. The situation has improved since mandatory quarantine was dropped in September, with Cathay’s average daily passenger numbers topping 33,000 in January. But there’s more to do before Lam can restore its standing as one of the world’s premier airlines.

“It’s going to be a little bit of a tunnel to still go through,” Lam told Bloomberg Television in one of his first interviews with international media since becoming CEO of the 76-year-old airline on Jan. 1.

Hong Kong's Cathay Pacific Is in Talks to Add as Many as 50 Airbus Planes
Bloomberg Excerpt
March 23, 2023

Cathay Pacific Airways Ltd. is in talks with aircraft lessors as it seeks to source as many as 50 of Airbus SE’s A320neo-type aircraft, people familiar with the discussions said, with Hong Kong’s main carrier aiming to ramp up and potentially expand following the scrapping of Covid curbs.

Given Airbus’s order book that stretches out several years, Cathay and its low-cost unit HK Express are initially looking at the leased-jet market to get planes faster, said the people, asking not to be identified as the discussions aren’t public. While the company would like to buy new jets directly from Airbus, the planemaker is booked up through 2029.

Together, Cathay and HK Express currently have a combined 222 aircraft in their fleet, including 40 A320 family jets. After three years of effectively closed borders and crippling quarantine rules, Cathay is seeking a comeback, with new Chief Executive Officer Ronald Lam eyeing a return to net profit on resurgent flight demand.

Hong Kong, mainland China’s Urumqi to launch first direct flight route from next week in bid to connect businesses with Xinjiang region
South China Morning Post Excerpt
April 26, 2023

A first direct carrier flight between Hong Kong and mainland China’s Urumqi will take off next Wednesday, which aviation analysts have said could help the city take on a bigger role in bringing foreign investors to the Xinjiang region.

The new flight path, which will be run by Urumqi Air, an aviation unit of Chinese conglomerate HNA Group, will operate trips every Wednesday from May 3 and is expected to shave at least three hours off previous routes between the two cities.

The route’s opening was first announced by state media China News Service and other news outlets in Xinjiang earlier this week, with further details published on the Urumqi government website on Sunday.

Airport staff union suggests improving local workers' welfare over importing labour
The Standard Excerpt
June 5, 2023

Sources have stated that the government mulls launching a special scheme to hire foreign airport workers, such as ground staff and baggage handlers, leading to objections from the Staffs and Workers Union of Hong Kong Civil Airlines.

The union said the authorities should instead focus on retaining local manpower and attracting new workers by increasing salaries and their welfare.

It added that the Airport Authority should provide transportation services for the employees to facilitate them reaching their workplace, along with offering more traffic and transport subsidies.

Hong Kong airfares likely to remain high until second half of 2024, senior Qatar Airways executive predicts
South China Morning Post Excerpt
June 13, 2023

Hong Kong airfares will continue to remain high until at least the second half of next year, a Qatar Airways senior executive has predicted, saying he also expects the company’s revenue from its services in the city to increase by up to 20 per cent this year over 2022 levels.

Qatar Airways’ North Asia manager Chan Cheong-eu told the Post on Tuesday that demand for flights in and out of the city was likely to continue to exceed supply until the second half of next year.

“Supply and demand is still a real issue,” said Chan, who is based in Beijing. “Cathay Pacific Airways is still operating at 50 per cent of its pre-pandemic capacity. Many airlines have still not returned to Hong Kong or may not come back to the city, but demand has gone up to 70 to 80 per cent of pre-pandemic levels.”

Cathay Pacific expects up to $576 mln first-half profit as demand rebounds
Excerpt

July 14 (Reuters) - Hong Kong's Cathay Pacific Airways 0293.HK on Friday said it expects to record half-year profit attributable up to HK$4.5 billion ($575.85 million) compared with a loss of HK$5.0 billion last year.

It would be Cathay Pacific's first half-year profit in three years buoyed by a strong rebound in travel demand, an increase in group capacity and a one-off gain from a stake sale in Air China.

The city's flagship carrier expects consolidated profit attributable to shareholders between HK$4 billion and HK$4.5 billion.
