FYI The apartment building was used in the episode of Route 66 that was filmed in the early sixties.

bring more housing too.

we are blessed to live in a city that still has announcements like this, with all the negative economy (recession) talk we hear about on a daily basis. God I love this city.

Austin is MORE diverse (in almost everyway) and more interesting than its ever been in my nearly 40 years living here.
That area, just south of the Drag, is starting to become a solid hotel spot. You've got Hampton Inn, Hilton Garden Inn, the Otis, Hotel Ella, ATT Conference Center. Graduate will just add more heat to the area. Not quite as dense as the convention district, but pretty dense nonetheless. I hope over time we start to push some of those fast food joints out along MLK in favor of more walkable restaurant/pub/boutique action.

^^ On that thought, I've often wondered if there should be a mini-convention center in that area for that reason. Tap into UT-related things, State-related things, as well as general smaller conventions.

As it happens, they actually DO function as the meeting space component of the mini convention center. They've got 90k sq ft of meeting space and only 297 rooms -- that ratio is wildly unbalanced. (Consider the Fairmont or JW, both at about 1000 rooms, and 100,000 sq ft, or 800 rooms at the Hilton with 80,000 sq ft). So ATT will book a large group, fill up the rooms in-house, and then start to search for overflow blocks at the other hotels. I actually had a good long conversation with their Director of Sales and Marketing recently and he confirmed this as their go-to strategy.

(FWIW, this is really the strategy of any group house, no matter where they are. My good friend is the DOSM up at Kalahari, and they do the same thing -- fill the meeting space with a large group, and roll off a good chunk of the room block to other nearby hotels, leaving a block of unsold rooms for more expensive business and/or leisure travelers)

A demolition application scheduled to appear at the October 5 meeting of the city’s Historic Landmark Commission could point to a new tower development on the northwestern edge of downtown Austin. The permit, listed for consideration on the upcoming meeting’s agenda, indicates an applicant is seeking to demolish the building at 1800 Guadalupe Street, a former apartment building dating back to 1923 that’s currently occupied by the office of law firm Dunham & Jones. Co-founding attorney Paul Dunham sold the property earlier this summer to an LLC connected with the Nashville-based real estate company Adventurous Journeys Capital Partners — and that same LLC also simultaneously purchased the larger adjacent western property at 410 West 18th Street from owners the Burt Group.
Site plan filed:

The applicant is proposing a multi family building and hotel with associated amenities and parking garage.

Love the brick. I think this has the potential to be one of the best looking buildings in the city, with the right material choices.

Looks very similar to the Graduate property in Nashville which is a very handsome building. The brick will stand out in this part of town and will provide an interesting contrast to the all glass courthouse next door.

Nothing like it in Austin at the moment. That brick is surprisingly unique.

Hotel Zaza begs to differ. Digging this as well, the current tenants are moving out.
