interestingly, that was brought up when SLC hosted the Winter Olympics in 2002. there were people in Boise that wondered if Boise could eventually be a future host (they were thinking 30 or 40 years down the road).
I don't see it happening anytime soon. The infrastructure isn't here, and despite the number of new hotels build recently, it would require many more rooms to be added.
If somewhere decades from now Boise could handle such an event, Boise would probably host a few events (opening/closing ceremonies and arena events), with the outdoor events held in Sun Valley or Tamarack Resort, both about 2+ hours away. the local ski resort (Bogus Basin) could handle snowboarding, but the hill isn't large enough for the downhill.
Boise DID host the 2009 Winter Special Olympics (opening/closing ceremonies were held in suburban Nampa), with events scattered throughout the valley and southern Idaho, including Sun Valley. It was successful though much smaller in scale than the regular games.
