Technocity ..

Development of a Technology City in Thiruvananthapuram under the name ‘Technocity' is an already announced dream project of the State Government.

Business eco-system: Thiruvananthapuram's business eco-system has succeeded in creating the biggest Tier-II IT/ITeS destination in India which accounts for 75-80 per cent of Kerala's IT exports.

Human resources: Thiruvananthapuram has a significant catchment of human resources which primarily consists of southern Kerala and southern Tamil Nadu (Kanyakumari, Tirunelveli, Tuticorin and Virudhunagar districts) and also extends to the rest of Kerala.Knowledge hub:

Thiruvananthapuram is one of India's leading hubs of research and development and higher education in terms of both the number of institutions of national importance and the sheer diversity of fields that they are involved in. This provides an excellent base for IT/ITeS and technology firms to source both intellectual capital and human resources.

Social infrastructure: All the facilities available in an Indian metro, if not in a major international city, are also available in Thiruvananthapuram.

Healthcare: The city has around 10 tertiary care hospitals and more than 50 specialty private hospitals in addition to high-quality public health-care. Thiruvananthapuram and the State also has perhaps the highest doctor-population ratios in India and has a human development index score on health which is close to developed countries such as the US and the UK.

Diverse portfolio: Unlike most other Tier- II IT/ITeS destination which focus mostly on BPO and low-end IT operations with focus on cost arbitrage, Thiruvananthapuram is focused on product and application development, KPO and R&D while still maintaining a healthy share of ITeS work.

Finally, the city also has a healthy record of home-grown successes, such as UST Global which has over 8,000 employees and offices across the world or IBS which is now a top provider of logistics software to leading airlines across the world. Over 300 SMEs operate in the IT/ITeS domain in the city and they provide a major captive market for both built-up space and developed land.

A trip through Travancore history

Quote:
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The new international terminal of the Thiruvananthapuram Airport which is being decked up for inauguration would not only throw open world class facilities to passengers, but may also serve as a window to the past glory of the capital city.

A mural depicting images of Thiruvananthapuram city taken around 150 years ago may become an attraction at the new terminal, with the blessings of the Travancore royal family. The information that the royal family is in possession of a collection of old photographs and paintings, has ignited the idea of exhibiting murals of the past legacy of the capital city amidst the world class facilities.

Thiruvananthapuram MP Shashi Tharoor has already spoken to Uthradom Thirunal Marthanda Varma, head of the Travancore royal family, in this regard and the latter has expressed his willingness to share the valuable treasure.

Sources close to the MP told this paper that following a suggestion from Airport Director V N Chandran, the MP had spoken to Uthradom Thirunal Marthanda Varma and the latter had expressed wholehearted support. But the pictures are yet to be traced. The MP has also communicated to the Airport Director that he may call on Uthradom Thirunal Marthanda Varma and pursue the idea.

The pictures and paintings that were done during the time of British rule mainly depict the past lifestyles in Thiruvananthapuram. Marthanda Varma is also known for his craze for photography.

The new terminal, developed at a total cost of Rs 289 core, is coming up at a time when the Thiruvananthapuram airport has entered its platinum jubilee year. Spread over 32,200 square metres, the new terminal can handle 1,600 passengers at a time and an annual capacity to handle 18 lakh passengers. It will have 30 check-in counters with Common User Terminal Equipment (CUTE) facility for easy transit of passengers, 14 immigration counters, two Customs counters and four security check counters in departure.

There will be 12 immigration counters and nine Customs check counters for the arriving passengers. With glass being a major portion of the new structure, it also provides natural lighting inside the terminal building.

Another attraction of the new terminal is that visitors can enter the terminal building up to a point so that they can see a departing passengers even after checking in, which is not possible in the existing terminal. The entry would, however, be restricted with a ticket.

  • Steps are on to connect the newly constructed international terminal with Rail & Water Transports.
  • As part of this,a Boat Jetty will be constructed at Parvathi Puthanar and a railway line either from Chacka or Kochuveli will be constructed.
  • The airport director already requested the Principal Secretary,Local Self Department to clean up the Parvathi Puthanar and make Alappuzha-Kovalam navigational. If it is not possible atleast the Kovalam stretch (5kms from airport) to make navigational.
  • As per the estimates of railway Rs.5 crores may require to construct a railway line of one kilometer. If the railway line is from Chacka, the distance will be one km and if it is from Kochuveli it will be 4kms.The railways expressed the willingness to construct such line.
  • If this come into reality TVM airport will be the first airport in India having an integrated access (Road,Rail & Water)
  • This facility is presently available only in few airports like Armsterdam,San Fransisco,Jeneva etc.
