Where’s the data coming from? Did the CB release urban area numbers?

From the stats (and see LA's position) it looks like Mexican immigration has basically stopped all together.

I can't decide whether the growth number for Miami or L.A. is most shocking.

So just to clarify is this by Metro Area or Urban Area? They are 2 entirely different things.

It looks like Mexican immigration has basically stopped. The only urban area with 10k+ growth is San Antonio.

Oops just saw this. But that was the main takeaway I got as well.

I also wonder where all of LA’s immigrants are moving to. Despite having negative growth, LA’s overall immigrant population is still solidly 2nd.

Right, but Mexican immigration is traditionally a big share of immigration to LA. When it shifts to zero, it obviously affects total net immigration.

Are you able to do another version of this list as a % of total CSA population?

I thought about the IE migration too but according to the numbers posted, it also hasn’t increased much in terms of immigration numbers. You would think it’d be higher if people were moving from LA to the IE. In contrast, Sacramento has decent immigration growth for a metro of its size. I suspect a good proportion of that is from the Bay Area. In that way given LA’s negative growth, I would’ve expected to see that translated to very high growth in the IE. Now I’m starting to suspect they’re moving to Vegas instead.

Maybe Fresno, Bakersfield, and random smaller inland metros? And Phoenix?

Just looking at NYC's immigration patterns, Philly and small metros within about a 2-hour drive seem to have the most local migrant interplay. Places like Hartford, Scranton, Hazelton, etc.

absolutely, Las Vegas is the #1 out-of-state destination from LA, but the Inland Empire is the #1 destination from LA overall. Immigration definitely slowed down but this state is a spring board for growth to the entire West and now the South as well, it first started among Whites and now we see the movement of immigrants as well, to me this is fine and as it should be. This is the same pattern that existed in the East Coast as well decades ago.

On the other hand, let's not get carried away into thinking that this trend is permanent, nothing is permanent when it comes to demographics. it's always shifting.

What I don't like is the implication that somehow we are not diverse. That's nonsense.

this has been sitting on my laptop for a while...

Dallas has very impressive numbers for India. Wouldn't have guessed that Dallas was the #2 MSA for net Indian immigration growth.

Going back to the first post, it's wild how much the decline in Mexican immigration has effected some places. Is it expected to be permanently in decline? This is going to shake-up the ethnic diversity in some places. I guess the important aspect of Hispanic communities is high birth rates, so it's possible the communities still grow but the influx of people from the homeland has stopped for the most part.

Wonder why LA is doing so badly, even worse than San Diego...Mexican immigration may have declined but other immigration from other Hispanic groups is surging as are Puerto Ricans leaving their island...
