Easier access to other parts of the city via public transportation. It needs a CTA line running through the area like the brown line does for LP. Ravenwood, Lincoln Sq, etc. The Metra Electric line is ok but it only takes you downtown. And the red line is far away on the highway. And the green line is on the outbound of the area and kinda not the safest line to take. So that's what Hyde Park is missing.

I don't think Hyde Park needs to compete with those neighborhoods. It's fine the way it is: An academic enclave that primarily supports the diverse members of its community. It's not really a place for people who want to commute to or work somewhere else in the city. At least, that's not the sort of place it's historically been.

Based on that standard, Hyde Park isn't missing anything. For what it's worth, Hyde Park didn't have everything I was looking for when I lived there as a student back in the day. So I moved in closer to the Loop. I don't think more bars, restaurants, or access to public transportation in Hyde Park would have changed that decision. I just wanted to be closer to center of the city where stuff was going on.

Still excited for the design reveal, but whenever a major U of C project comes along, I'm not necessarily looking for design work from HDR. Sure, there's decent stuff in their portfolio, but a good amount of it is fairly dialed-in, pedestrian.

Has the architect for the Cancer Center been announced?

Yeah, and that is a high profile location. However, I have seen examples of how architects who do a good job at UChicago do mediocre work elsewhere. I think it speaks to the University's involvement behind the scenes (although there is that durn Max Palevsky dorm, alas.)

For instance, I like Jeanne Gang and love Campus North. But compare UChicago's brilliant Rubenstein Forum with the mediocre Harvard Rubenstein "tree house" conference center just announced.

Also, the firms that did a nice B school and hospital for UChicago did an ugly box B school for Northwestern and blah hospital for Stanford.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:H...hew_Bisanz.jpg

https://stanfordhealthcare.org/disco...tal-story.html

A very high placed source tells me the cancer center design is done and is quite nice. I hope that bears out.

(And if you don't like the designs when they are announced, be sure to send a message to the powers that be telling them so.)

Correction: Rafael Viñoly did UChicago Hospital and B School and Stanford Hospital. KPMB Architects did Northwestern B school. But I stand by the appraisals.

I was wondering that myself. But I thought the cancer hospital is supposed to be 7 stories. And isn't the sky lobby on 7 in CCD? So the skybridge would have to be on the top floor of the cancer hospital to go up there...

I couldn't remember what floor the sky lobby was... I haven't been there in years. Some random floor is even weirder... all the other skybridges are on the second floor as far as I know...

Looks like it's inspired by northwesterns biomedical research building.

I dunno, the rendering of the new cancer hospital looks to be well over seven stories. And, from counting the floors in the rendering, the bridge over 57th will be seven stories up. Since the Sky Lobby in CCP is on the 7th floor, that all makes sense.

I don't know for sure, and it's possible things have changed, but the application with the state said 7 stories:

"The Medical Center proposes a master design project seeking approval for architectural and other pre-project costs necessary to complete planning for the construction and equipping of approximately 544,000 square foot building. The building will be seven stories and include: a 128-bed inpatient hospital with all private rooms."

https://www2.illinois.gov/sites/hfsr...%20Project.pdf

The HP article says it's still 500,000 sq. ft. and 128 patient rooms. I'm guessing still 7 stories but I could be wrong.

That is really bland and uninspired.

The upper levels are bland and uninspired, but the street level is horrific if the rendering is true to form. I’m confused about the perspective of the rendering. It looks to me that it’s from 57th and Maryland looking NorthEast… If I’m correct and it’s just captioned wrong then it seems like the main entrance would be on Drexel and we can’t really see it. Would love to see another perspective of the rendering.
