Capitol Theatre, Moncton, New Brunswick:

This last photo looks a tad unfinished. I wonder if it was taken during renovations. In any event, it shows the decorative scroll work around the stage very well, and also the box seats lining the edge of the stage.

There are actually two theatres in this complex - the Capitol and the Empress. The Empress is smaller, and generally used for intimate recitals. The Capitol is used for smaller touring performances (I believe the seating capacity is just under 900), the Atlantic Ballet Theatre of Canada (based in Moncton), Symphony NB, community theatre performances (the Nutcracker every Christmas is a staple), and the Capital Theatre's own performing arts series.

In addition to the Capitol Theatre, there are several other performance venues in the city:

- the Molson Canadian Centre at Casino NB seats 2,000 and nabs quite a few touring acts that want more seating than the Capitol can provide.
- the Avenir Centre is able to seat 10,000 and gets the major concerts on tour and acts like Cirque de Soleil.
- the auditorium at the old Moncton High School is being refurbished as the new home for the Atlantic Ballet Theatre, has excellent acoustics, and seats over 1,200.
- both Riverview and Dieppe have their own arts & cultural centres capable of holding small concerts and recitals.

and finally, the Medavie Blue Cross Stadium at UdeM can hold up to 20,000 for outdoor concerts, and the Magnetic Hill Concert Site has packed in as many as 80,000 for acts such as the Rolling Stones and U2.

Garneau Theatre, Edmonton Alberta:

http://www.miguelitoslittlegreencar....rneau-theatre/

Unfortunately, many of Edmonton’s historic theatres have been destroyed over the ages, but perhaps the nicest one still remaining is the Garneau. This Art Moderne gem was built in 1940 by William Wilson’s fledgling Suburban Theatre Co. Designed by prominent Alberta Modernist William Blakey, it was estimated to have cost $100,000 to construct. Interestingly its lobby and waiting areas were originally decked out with second hand furniture from the Hotel MacDonald, crafted specifically for the Royal Visit in 1939. Run for decades by the Famous Players chain, it is now operated by Metro Cinema which serves a smorgasbord of interesting content.

The theatre stands as perhaps Alberta’s best remaining Moderne cinema, and is among the nicest remaining in Western Canada. It is purportedly the last Moderne movie house in the province that has been running nonstop since its inception.

It would be designated a Municipal Historic Resource in 2009 and restored the same year.

Here are some of the more modern theatres in Toronto. A lot of the ornate older theatres have sadly been lost, but the show must go on.

Some fabulous theatres here. All of Ottawa's grand theatres were demolished years ago.

We have two older movie cinemas (indie films mostly) still standing, though they are both quite plain.

The ByTowne on Rideau Street

The Mayfair on Bank (Old Ottawa South)

And a few of our performance theatres.

La Nouvelle Scène, Ottawa's Franco-Ontarian theatre on King Edward. The new building opened just a few years ago on the site of the original.

The Great Canadian Theatre Company (GCTC) on Wellington West.

And of course, Ottawa's premier preforming arts theatre, the National Arts Centre in the heart of Downtown, with it's beautiful glass addition and digital lantern. Celebrating 50 years this month.

The NAC main venue, Southam Hall.

We have plenty of other theatres, such as the Ottawa Little Theatre on King Edward. In the suburbs, the most prominent are probably the Shenkman Arts Centre in Orléans and Centrepointe Theatre in Nepean. Gatineau has a few, such as the Théâtre de l'Île on the Ruisseau de la Brasserie in Hull and la Salle Odyssey in "old" Gatineau.

The Met

Burton Cummings Theatre (aka the Walker Theatre)

The building was originally supposed to be part of a larger hotel complex but the hotel portion was never built so today we have just a half façade.

The Royal Alexandra Theatre

A masterpiece of beaux-arts architecture, the historic is Toronto's senior theatre and, at 108, never having been converted to any other use, the oldest continuously operating legitimate theatre in North America.

Medicine Hat's Monarch Theatre has been an amazing Classic movie theatre for years...

http://themonarch.net/

The Esplanade in Med Hat is a great performance arts theatre with ~700 seats

http://esplanade.ca/

Some other Prairie performance theatres of note:
Swift Current's Lyric Theatre

http://www.lyrictheatre.ca/

Moose Jaw's Mae Wilson Theatre ~500 seats

http://www.moosejawculture.ca/

Prince Albert's EA Rawlinson Centre for the Arts ~500 seats

https://www.earc.ca/

Brandon's Western Manitoba Centennial Auditorium ~800 seats

http://www.wmca.ca/

NorthWestern Ontario's, Thunder Bay Community Auditorium has 1,500 seats. Impressive size for the city, in fact larger than any Auditorium in Atlantic Canada, and houses some nation wide touring shows & concerts.

Saskatoon commemorated last month the demolition of The Capitol Theatre fourty years ago...

The Atmospheric Capitol Theatre was built in 1929 and with 1,600 seats it was the city's main movie house for decades. But with completion in the early 1970's of Saskatoon's Centennial Auditorium, TCU Place, and newer multi-screen movie theatres built, The Capitol was ear marked for demolition by an Edmonton developer for the Scotia Centre mall and office towers.

Saskatoon residents formed large demonstrations in reaction to the decision but to no avail, The Capitol Theatre saw the wrecking ball in 1979. Saskatoon's Historical Society spurred on by the demolition has played a part in the city's other developments since.
