Sure. For most Chicago area folks that will be a +5h RT and will involve a transfer at Metra terminals and biking an hour each way from Kenosha depot station to The Center in Kenosha. I guess on 60 nice temperate days we have per year, for those with tons of time to blow, and the few Americans fit enough able to bike that distance it will be a great option. So less than 1% of all trips to the center.

^ yeah, considering that the center is a 10 mile bike ride from the metra station in kenosha, mostly along high-speed country roads without bike lanes, i can't imagine that many visitors to the center from chicagoland will be utilizing the metra/bike option.

further hurting the cause, the center is located right off of an exit from I-94.

people gonna drive there.

Speaking of Lagrange projects, here's a story with a link to interior photos of 8000 North in Skokie. Not bad IMO:

It'd be nice if Oak Brook had a specific area for highrises instead of them being spread out. I like the trend of upzoning suburban areas, hoping the era of mass building strip malls and shit like that is left in the past. I know DC does the suburban highrise thing really well with it connected to WMATA

I spent a LOT of late nights at that burger king back in the day. Good times. Sad to see it go but this development is pretty great so not THAT sad.

Wow, Mt Prospect is seeing Elmhurst levels of growth. That bit about Angelo Caputos is interesting - having a grocery store that is walkable to downtown apartments is huge.

The NW burbs actually have quite a few "downtown" or downtown-adjacent grocery options, but Caputo's should be the first one that is an urban format store instead of pushed behind a big parking lot like the Jewels in Barrington/Palatine/Arlington Hts. Arlington Hts also has a Marianos that is walkable to downtown and Des Plaines has Save-a-Lot.

I'm glad Chicago has so many suburban downtowns and they seem to be absorbing most of the output from the current apartment boom. It's weird to look at places like Dallas or Atlanta where they just throw up 4+1 apartments wherever, you have midrises that are "urban" in theory but just in the middle of total non-walkable suburban sprawl.

Some recent proposals the past month. It's been great watching the surrounding suburbs develop dense proposals the past two years. Even NW Indiana is embracing TOD

Honestly that entire side of Yorktown mall needs to be redone, the shops on the other side of the ring drive there are almost all vacant also.

This Michigan City proposal is very cool. There has been so much potential for Michigan City to be NW Indiana's version of those western Michigan towns that dot the shoreline between New Buffalo and Traverse City. Rerouting the South Shore Line closer to the Lake was a smart decision. Now if they can just figure out how to close down the power plant and redevelop that, Michigan City could really take off.

Have they decided to reroute the South Shore Line closer to the Lake?

Maybe I'm just confused, but the latest info I see is from articles in February 2022, saying "an $80 million mixed-use project that will include a rebuilt South Shore Line station at the site of the recently torn-down 11th Street Station." (with a ground breaking summer 2023, station open May 2024, and apartments open spring 2025):

https://www.wndu.com/2022/02/24/priv...-improvements/

https://www.trains.com/trn/news-revi...-city-station/

So it seems like the SSL station will remain about a mile inland. I can see why people might wish it was less than that in order to promote a more compact walkable downtown. But I might also worry if it were right up against the river that would be a pain for everyone but tourists and give those tourists less reason to ever go more than a few blocks from the water.

Regarding the NIPSCO coal plant, I'm personally hoping that the National Park can expand to include at least some of the old plant's land when it closes in 2026-2028. Although I wouldn't be opposed to some private development on the part nearest to town to create a touristy gateway area. But I expect proper environmental remediation will be expensive, and key to getting either of those done.

As a future vision for the Indiana Dunes NP: It would be awesome if you could easily get off the SSL train in Michigan City, backpack across the park's beaches and trails for a few days, and hop back on a train at the other end of the trail in Gary (or vice versa). You can do that on an even grander scale in Glacier NP via the East Glacier and West Glacier Amtrak stations, and I love the idea of mixing trains and backcountry hiking and camping for a car-free vacation.
