I didn’t get close to it, but I saw it was sitting there. I was thinking it was lighter in color than the renderings, but looking at it here, its about right.

This section of the High Line was expected to open this month, so I’m assuming it will be put in place within days.

Trusses are such impressive expressions of engineering . .
beautifully architectural . . I usually associate them with
industrial age rivets & iron . . Mighty structural supports as
those found in bridgework, deserve aesthetic emphasis . .
Showpieces such as the vertical cross-bracing on “Big John”
Hancock (Chicago) . . trusses in the GWB, PA Bus Terminal,
Queensboro Br. (NYC) . . their visually spectacular triangular
beam formations are essential, in great feats of urban
infrastructure . .

On a smaller scale, wooden trusses that support
old barns and country bridges, are pretty wonderful too
. . They have a simple, quaint decorative strength, that’s
traditional, straightforward, functional & rustic . . Thick
wooden bridge trusses are an unpretentious bucolic feature
in any landscape . . I assume that these wooden Highline
bridge trusses will darken & mellow with age . .

Whether we’re talking about the city’s massive industrial
iron trusswork, or preindustrial wood-beam trusses,
distinctive structural gestures such as these, warrant
our appreciation . . There’s a feeling of pleasure to be had . .
Experience the boast, if there’s a retro-romantic steam-
punk vibe . . Or a satisfyingly bold functional no-frills design
configuration . . perhaps a very rare charming pastoral
storybook sensibility is being expressed . . Just thank God
that it’s not, yet another generic concrete freeway overpass
type thing . .

Do we know who paid for this?

Besides that it's very nice. Always good to see the highline extended. Wonder if we'll here about the extension to the Pier soon, or if they've dropped that idea.

The extension was still in a conceptual phase.

Quote:
In early 2021, New York State announced the High Line Moynihan Connector Civic Project, a proposal to create a landscaped, elevated, and ADA-accessible public pathway that would connect the High Line to an existing publicly accessible space at Manhattan West. The proposed project would give pedestrians safe, unobstructed access to the Far West Side of Manhattan via two bridges that would connect to the Tenth Avenue terminus of the High Line.

A public-private partnership comprising Empire State Development, the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, Brookfield Properties Group, and Friends of the High Line is undertaking the $50 million project, which is expected to be completed by Spring 2023.

https://www.thehighline.org/connections/

Quote:
The second piece of High Line Connections would extend from the High Line westward to Hudson River Park. This would start at the northwestern end of the High Line, which currently terminates at 34th Street and 12th Avenue, moving northward, past the Javits Center, before turning west to cross the West Side Highway and end at Pier 76 at Hudson River Park.

The Hudson River Park Connector is still a concept, and requires research, design and planning before a budget and timeline can be determined. Most importantly, we will continue to engage with community members and local elected officials to ensure that the plan is informed by the needs and priorities of those who call this neighborhood home. The Port Authority and Empire State Development will work together to study engineering requirements and costs.

I would've thought the city would've been a bit more apprehensive about a wood truss ped bridge after the Brooklyn Heights Promenade pedestrian bridge issues.

It’s there now, and very visible due to the color. Not sure if it’s open yet though, it wasn’t last weekend.

That bridge is also very visible if you walk down 30th Street.

High Line Pedestrian Bridges Open, Linking New York’s Far West Side Developments
Area Has Attracted Tenants Including Facebook Parent Meta and KKR

By Andria Cheng
June 21, 2023

Quote:
The so-called connector is the fourth major SOM project in the area’s bid to transform from an industrial site to a thriving retail, residential, hotel, entertainment and office destination that counts among such office tenants as Facebook parent Meta, retail giant Amazon, and investment firms KKR and BlackRock.

SOM designed Moynihan Train Hall and redeveloped the historic James A. Farley post office building that houses it into tech office space that Meta leases from Vornado. It also has designed the 1,000-foot-tall mixed-used 35 Hudson Yards luxury residential tower for Related as well as doing the design and master plan for the 7 million-square-foot, mixed-use Manhattan West.
Quote:
With well-resourced office tenants seeking desirable office space that they hope will help them attract and keep talent, the area’s access to the High Line is part of the appeal as outdoor access is among valued features, industry executives have said.

A case in point, as New York’s first-quarter office vacancy rate reached a record high, Hudson Yards’ average direct asking rent of $144 was the highest among all Manhattan neighborhoods and above the city average of $82.50, according to a JLL study.

This would be the High Line connection we are waiting for...the state is currently in the process of finalizing plans for the permanent conversion of the pier into a park.

S.S. United States could leave Philly after more than 25 years for redevelopment project
The historic ship could undergo a project that would see it taken to the Hudson River in New York where it would be turned into a space with music and event venues along with a hotel

November 2, 2023
By Hayden Mitman

Quote:
A new proposal could the rusting remains of the SS United States returned to New York after spending nearly 30 years on the Delaware River in South Philadelphia.

According to the SS United States Conservancy, the nonprofit group that owns the vessel, a recently released development plan -- developed in conjunction with two New York firms, RXR and MCR Hotels -- would see the ocean liner repurposed into a 1,000 room hotel with space for music and event venues, public green space and a museum.

"The SS United States symbolizes the nation’s ambition and innovation. Our development partners have embraced the patriotic and economic significance of this monumental project. Through their extensive due diligence, they have created a bold and exciting plan that preserves the ship’s history and activates the vessel’s commercial potential,” said Susan Gibbs, president of the SS United States Conservancy.

Organizers said the effort would be part of a decades-long effort to protect and revitalize the Hudson River waterfront.
Quote:
According to a statement from the conservancy, the release of this plan comes at a time when the vessel is under pressure to move and is facing eviction.

“The Conservancy’s partners and passionate supporters from across the country and around the world have created a viable path forward to save the SS United States,” added Gibbs, the granddaughter of the ship’s original designer. “But we are quickly running out of time. We know this can be a viable, transformative project. Let’s rally together to secure a home for America’s Flagship.”

"The vessel’s landlord doubled the Conservancy’s rent without notice during the coronavirus pandemic, placing significant financial strain on the organization. The Conservancy is presently in litigation on the matter, with a trial date slated for early December," the group said in a statement.
Quote:
The plan would place the SS United States on Manhattan's Hudson River, and would call for development of piers to create would entail the "redesign and reconstruction of adjacent piers, which would create acres of new public green space aboard the vessel and adjoining areas," organizers said in a statement.

Organizers are now working to secure state and local interest to advance the plan in New York City, they said in a statement.

Interesting to position it perpendicularly like that, instead of like the Intrepid. Makes it way more visible, but it's a beautiful ship so not a bad thing. Very cool idea, with the connection to the High Line and development of that pier to a park.

Plans Floated for SS United States to Become Hotel — and Berth at Pier 76

by Phil O'Brien

Quote:
Plans are being floated to return the historic ocean liner SS United States to the Hudson River, regenerate Pier 76 and connect the High Line to the ship transformed into a 1,000 room hotel.

The SS United States has languished for years at Pier 82 in Philadelphia — with the nonprofit organization, SS United States Conservancy, leading efforts to save and repurpose the legendary Transatlantic cruise ship. Now, the conservancy has announced a plan, developed in conjunction with two prominent New York firms, RXR and MCR Hotels, that would repurpose the legendary ocean liner as a unique, mixed-use destination, including a 1,000 key hotel, numerous food and beverage destinations, multiple event venues, acres of public green space and a world-class museum.

The project is being lauded by the conservancy as “a capstone to a decades-long effort to protect and revitalize the Hudson River waterfront, create thousands of new jobs, and generate millions in tax revenue annually,” in a statement.

Renderings show the SS United States berthed at Pier 76 in Hell’s Kitchen — the former NYPD Towpound that was converted to public space by Governor Andrew Cuomo during the pandemic. Plans also show the Hudson River Park pier connected to the High Line via a spur from the Western Railyards at Hudson Yards.

Pier 76 is already home to part of the SS United States. At the opening of the park, one of the four propellers from the ship took pride of place at the entrance to the pier.

The conservancy says that the “plan for a privately funded, commercial redevelopment identified Manhattan’s Hudson River as the optimal “home port” for the vessel, due to its proximity to transportation and pedestrian access to the Javits Convention Center.”
Quote:
Although the plans have been drawn up for New York and Pier 76, the conservancy says that the “ship’s transformative potential is not restricted to New York. Other locations and port cities could benefit from the ship’s commercial revitalization and iconic status.”

RXR and MCR have teamed up with partners, including Gibbs & Cox — the vessel’s original design firm, to develop the plan. Unlike previous ideas for the ship — including relaunching it as an oceangoing liner — this seems much more than a pipe dream, with the two lead partners having experience redeveloping iconic, historic properties in New York, including Eero Saarinen’s landmark 1962 TWA Flight Center and hotel at JFK Airport as well as Hudson River Park’s Pier 57.

Rechler’s ship-to-hotel plan in deep trouble
Decrepit ocean liner faces eviction in Philly, won’t fit at NYC pier

JAN 16, 2024
By TRD Staff

Quote:
If Scott Rechler has that sinking feeling, it’s because his plan to turn an old ocean liner into a hotel is taking on water.

The RXR chief executive and the SS United States Conservancy aim to save the deteriorating SS United States by making it a New York City hotel. But state and local officials aren’t accommodating their request for a pier and the 1950s ship is facing eviction from Philadelphia, Newsday reported.

The aging vessel is docked at a pier owned by Penn Warehousing. During the pandemic, Penn doubled the rent and then moved to evict so it could redevelop the property. The ship’s champions are fighting the pier owner in court, but are readying a move regardless.
Quote:
Rechler and the conservancy want to relocate the SS United States to Pier 76 in Manhattan, which is in Hudson River Park near the Javits Convention Center. The West Side pier is owned by the state, but the Hochul administration is giving Rechler and crew no harbor, despite the executive’s prolific real estate donations and civic involvement over the years.

It has instead deferred to the Hudson River Park Trust, which says the pier could not even support a small vessel, let alone a 990-foot behemoth. Dredging would also be required.

The conservancy says the hotel project would create jobs, revenue and public amenities, such as green open space. The pier in question is used for events and as an impound lot.

In case that doesn’t work out, the conservancy is drawing up contingency plans. It has approached the governors of Florida and Pennsylvania about putting the floating hotel in Miami or Philadelphia, respectively.
