Not just speaking about skylines, but about urbanism, the inland Chinese cities are these huge unknowns that are rapidly being closed off behind a second iron curtain for us.

A city like Chongqing looks incredibly intriguing: it has a Manhattan's worth of skyscrapers plunked down on a Pittsburgh-esque landscape.

But China is becoming more of a hassle to visit, and I'm not getting any younger, so I will probably never see it in the flesh. For us Westerners, China is reverting back to a fantastical place in our imaginations, something Marco Polo-ish, rather than a "real place".

I really regret not making more of an effort to go to mainland China pre-2020. I didn't have a crystal ball to know the future, of course, but I did have several opportunities to go and passed on them because I didn't want to go through the hassle of getting a visa, and being without my passport for an unpredictable amount of time.

Something the Chinese don't get enough credit for is how much historic preservation they did in areas where Western (I don't want to say colonial...) powers landed and controlled land. Qingdao retains a massive German influence, Shanghai a clear European influence, Hong Kong British, etc.

Qingdao

Not the most impressive skyline but the merging of culture and built form is very interesting IMO. A lot of Chinese cities do this to a scale not seen very frequently.

Chongqing is legitimately insane and I hope to visit someday.

Chongqing

Guangzhou's skyline is pretty sick too. Lots of historic preservation/adaptive reuse as well. I guess now would be a good time to re-share my album: Guangzhou 2017

Agreed - I think the pencil supertalls are are making the skyline look really odd at the moment. However I think once more of those fill in the skyline it could start looking really balanced again in a new way - sorta like Coruscant from star wars.

How is London in your top 10? Unless it's purely aesthetics you're into.

I personally think scale and height matter though.

Those are quite old pics - Qingdao now looks like this, with 2 supertalls (tallest 1,210ft):

Though still has its Old Town

Chongqing -pretty much the Bladerunner backdrop par excellence. China's most visually epic city:

Where the two rivers meet -one alluvial, the other montane (natural colours)

Seeing Phoenix and Vegas listed among the best US skylines is a real head scratcher...

My list in no particular order, of skylines I've seen in person:
- NYC
- Chicago
- Shanghai
- Singapore
- Hong Kong
- Pittsburgh
- San Francisco
- Paris (La Defense)
- Montreal
- Los Angeles

Dont hate the player hate the game

While I am as surprised as anyone to see somebody list us on a skyline beauty list it can have its moments and angles. Poor girl just needs the to do a lot of work to look nice.

3,000 bridges and 3 mountains ranges also meet - Chongqing truly is a 3D city. It's looked down on in China for being gritty, but beloved by visitors because of that vibe:

If Pittsburgh kept growing, to be like 6-8 million people today, it could look like Chongqing.

With the two rivers joining, kind of like a much grander version of Pittsburgh.

What city? El Paso? Tucson? ABQ? Phoenix? Must be Phoenix or Tucson, since I saw saguaro cacti in earlier photos. None of those in ABQ or El Paso.

Yep. Warmer winters and hotter summers, but the rivers meeting are the same.
