I thought the pic came out pretty cool so here is bit more progress. It's nice to see stuff like this being built that isn't devoted to cars.

New Carrollton

RCDC-- great photo, thank you for posting.

Metro proposes replacing parking at New Carrollton station with development

Metro hopes to convert its Kiss and Ride parking lot and bus loop on the south side of the New Carrollton station into space for two new office buildings. (Katherine Shaver/The Washington Post)

Washington Post

"Metro hopes to help make its New Carrollton station the centerpiece of a new walkable “downtown” by replacing the bus zone and Kiss and Ride parking lot with two buildings that could accommodate apartments or offices, according to a proposal to be presented to the Metro board Thursday.

The buildings would be at the station’s south entrance, off Garden City Drive, and would be part of a years-long effort by Prince George’s County officials to transform the station surrounded by vast parking lots into a vibrant urban center of offices, apartments, shops and restaurants.

Metro officials say they are considering the area’s potential for new riders — and their fare revenue. The 77 Kiss and Ride parking spaces would be eliminated, and a new garage would accommodate buses on the ground floor..."

If WMATA builds this New Carrollton development, hopefully they can offer hourly (or every half hour) bus service from New Carrollton to Annapolis.

Why is it so hard to get to Annapolis by transit?

Frederick Douglass Bridge

Here is a photo of the construction of the new Frederick Douglass bridge, which will connect the Navy Yard/Capitol Riverfront and Buzzard Point with Anacostia. The photo is from CJBabyDaddy on Twitter.

Everything outside of the conspicuous organization of The District is seemingly as disorganized as the country roads that comprise suburban Atlanta. There aren't many alternate ways to get anywhere. You can see that there weren't many small towns in what now comprises suburban Washington.

There also wasn't a big freight rail network that was abandoned after industry pulled out like in Boston, which is how they came to have a very large commuter rail network.
You really don't know anything about the area. I don't know why you are spewing nonense.

Purple line waste of money. Boondoggle. The market from tony monty county to ugly trashy PG county will never ever be there. maybe some poor students will use it to travel to mommy's basement from school every day.

I bet everything I own that this thing will be underutilized.

Happy 44th birthday Metrorail

Metrorail carried its first passengers 44 years ago today on the opening segment between Rhode Island Avenue and Farragut North.

Virginia passenger rail

A new rail authority in Virginia could revolutionize connections for riders throughout the state

By Wyatt Gordon
March 31, 2020
Greater Greater Washington

"From new vehicle safety measures to the possibility of zero-fare transit pilots, the litany of policy changes inside Governor Ralph Northam’s recently passed transportation omnibus reads like a wishlist for urbanists. However, the one reform that could permanently transform transportation in the Commonwealth is the creation of a long-awaited Virginia Passenger Rail Authority (VPRA).

After decades of railroad corporations’ stranglehold on Virginia’s rail expansion plans, the Commonwealth will now join the elite handful of states featuring a legal entity with a mandate to own, manage, and expand rail infrastructure for the public good and the benefit of businesses across the region..."

purple line is a poor investment. Suburban transit is a waste of money.

Less than 2 weeks later you're back to do some more bitching about the purple line while adding nothing of substance to back up your claim.

It's true that the Purple Line does not have any anchors the size of downtown DC, but collectively Bethesda, Silver Spring, UMD, and New Carrollton add up to quite a few jobs and residential density.

If commuters are willing to consider a two-seat ride, it really opens up a ton of transit trip options across the whole of Montgomery and DC.... of course, those nodes along the line have to be willing to push parking limits and car-free development even more than they have been.

Is still ongoing construction to Dulles airports? When they will open? Is the rail go to Dulles airport? Are they supposed to be working?

Silver Line Extension Likely to Open in Spring 2021

Quote:
Although Metro is currently cutting routes and closing stations due to COVID-19, planning continues for the extension of the Silver Line into Loudoun County.

Initially, officials estimated phase two of the project would open by the summer. After delaying the projected opening several times and by several months, Metro officials now say the first trains will not begin running until April 2021, according to budget documents.

If the Purple Line was created in a vacuum, I would agree. Its not perfect. However, considering the system it is connecting to, it's quite nice. Its making a nice addition to the DC metro transit system. The Purple Line along with the Silver Line segment 2 are worthy projects. Question though, is there any plans(or need) to add more lines within the city of DC?
