I had the same thought. The Chocolate Factory was my favorite building on Washington Ave, and these would look great together. I'm still pissed about Ori's hell-bent attitude on knocking down anything historical and industrial once he lost his election. It was supposedly in good adaptable shape before he bought it. Then as soon as an outside brick fell, suddenly it needed demolition.

The new Shazam! trailer has lots of skyline shots. Looks great, even if most of it was filmed in Toronto.

Can't read it. Behind a paywall.

Looks like project got scaled down due to a lower number of tenants signing on. Suppose to start this year and finish up in 2022.

Looks like the Witherspoon building on Walnut off South Broad will get redeveloped.

Apartment-hotel chain leases an entire historic building in Market East

Sonder, a San Francisco company that is taking on Airbnb and traditional hotels, has leased the entire Witherspoon building in Philadelphia and is expanding its presence in the city.

The company signed a long-term deal with SSH Real Estate, which owns the building at 130 S. Juniper St. Under the agreement, SSH will build out the 165,000-square-foot building with 186 apartments and Sonder will operate and manage the units and property.

Great news! Hopefully they'll finally get something in the ground floor retail space(s). Listing for the retail space was taken down recently, hopefully that means they got one.

Taken on March 4:

Except for the one sheet of plywood on the front, guess this is all finished.

I love the Witherspoon Building. Excited to see it preserved. I saw the retail ads in the windows last week so they must have just come down.

Ignoring the grey paneling, I think the National looks pretty good.

Under the renovation plan the former visitors center was always slated to become something else.

How big is the renovated building supposed to be? Restaurants needs a whole lot of space to operate.

Jayfar is good at finding info like your question. But, article said 50-55 patrons for inside seating and up to 135 people on the balcony and in an adjoining park-level terrace. My guess 2500-3000 square feet of the saucer floor plate.

To my eye it's the exact same circumference as the original visitors center (it looks like they're keeping the "bones" of the building in tact). I think it will be a modern glass curtain wall that leads to the circular patio.

The old visitor center you actually step up stairs into and it looked like they were spending a ton of time during the reno on the underneath portion - the podium - that would be beneath the actual restaurant floor. My guess is that this is where the kitchen/ restaurant functions will go unless they do an open concept kitchen layout. In other words, there's deceptively a decent amount of space.

Besides, space is overrated - ever been to Little Fish?

It looks good. I must say. I will be interested in seeing how it does, though. A lot of dough for these units, and the living space for all except units 16, 6, and 4 -- the largest 1, 2, and 3 BRs respectively -- feels pretty cramped. With very lux finishes and large bedrooms. The master BR in some of these units looks larger than the living/kitchen/dining area. I guess there's a market for it, or we will see if there is.

To this day, I can't even fathom why the city would allow that proposal to be greatly reduced. It was perfect for that area, not too tall or imposing, but yet big enough to support that area and Broad Street in general. And this is yet another reason why cities like Phoenix and San Antonio continues to surpass us to this day!
