I like the idea as well, but it would definitely be a challenge. If you look at the Salt Palace on google, solar panels cover at least 50% of the roof. The other half has a ton a mechanical equipment. That said I still think there would be opportunities.

The best incorporation of rooftop greenery in the city is the Conference Center. Imagine how beautiful downtown would be if all large scale buildings were required to have rooftop landscaping.

So basically Green on good days, Yellow on moderate days, and Red on bad days?

I’ve often thought of this. A Japanese-themed park/garden given the history of the area.

I like this idea. Even if it were on the back (newer) end of the Salt Palace. And then build a four story pagoda tower that connects to the street below as a way of accessing the garden from outside. That would be pretty cool.

And then someone can purchase that vacant three story warehouse on the corner of 300 West and create a Japantown musuem and teahouse.

Astra Tower

Speaking of Astra Tower, Ive noticed driving south down State Street that the Astra Tower is much taller than 95 State even though its elevation is somewhat lover than 95 state.

I also think Astra looks quite tall as you drive north on state Street toward downtown.

Astra doesn’t impress me in any meaningful way, however I will say it’s the first building ever here that “feels” tall even if it’s only slightly taller than the meek COB and Wells Fargo Center, astra also isn’t aesthetically embarrassing like either of those other towers (though the exterior finishings look tightly budgeted so far). The Wells Fargo Center has the dimensions of a toaster causing it to appear to be 150ft tall.. and the COB looks cheap and phallic.

Aside from the roof of the convention center, my other idea for more greenspave downtown would be to extend Washington Square Park across 500s. The entire block between 500 and 600s is made up of car dealerships. If we could ever get those relocated then this could be an awesome park the size of 2 city blocks centered around our cities most beautiful historic building.

This reminds me, does anyone have any status updates on the Japantown makeover of 100 South behind the Salt Palace? I haven't heard anything about that in over a year.

^^^^

That stretch of 4th South between State Street and 2nd East is one if my least favorite spots downtown, I’d love to see anything else there across from the City County Building. Fingers crossed.

A full service fuel and curbside pick-up Kum & Go would be even better.

How about mixed use twin towers with residences, a hotel, and retail?

Downtown 10/20/23

This is the first time I've posted images, so hopefully the ones below are a reasonable size. Here are higher resolution images of the skyline, Astra, Worthington, the new liquor store, and Edison Apartments on 10/20/23: https://imgur.com/a/tU1mnAh

These are from my recent YouTube video, which is not strictly development focused, but it includes some other construction shots from May through October: https://youtu.be/nONDIBuZuSU

I'm late to this discussion, but I believe that we should create several Liberty Parks positioned throughout Utah Lake. Ideally these islands would be connected by a system of Gondolas.

A park here would prevent any further development of the city's only real bar/entertainment district. Until the state changes its laws around alcohol+parks, any park built downtown would hamper development and prevent vibrancy.
