On another note i guess nothing ever materialized with any gondola? Like NYguy said above connecting Governors Island with Brooklyn Bridge sounds like such a good idea.

As far as the buildings go, what gets built won't be those exact designs, but this was ALWAYS the plan. We don't get Governors Island without this. It's basically a small town that isn't going to pay for itself, especially with the limitations on what can get built there (a casino would pull in billions).

The public areas will remain open, that won't change. The areas to be built on are the desolate areas, or the areas that have yet to be fully demolished. There will be some lowrises, but don't expect anything tall to be built on the island.

New York is a city of islands, and the city has shown that it can all be pulled together for the greater good of the city. The new model of public/private investment is what has helped us with the new parks like the Brooklyn Bridge Park for example. Both the city and state are in dire need of funds (as is the rest of the nation). It's essential that we keep private investment paying for such things and exploring ways in which it can do more.

There's a chance to build something here that enhances the experience on the island, not to mention finally allowing for a year round opening. Of course, nobody wants it to become Manhattan light, but that's not what's happening here.
