Porsche picks Malaysian partner Sime Darby for first assembly plant outside Europe
By Farah Adilla - August 30, 2021 @ 12:06pm

Quote:
KUALA LUMPUR: Porsche AG will produce its sports cars outside Europe for the first time in Malaysia.

Porsche has chosen Sime Darby Bhd to set up the local assembly of its sports cars specifically for the Malaysian market.

Sime Darby, in a statement today, said its motor vehicle production and assembly facility would be the first assembly plant of the German sports car manufacturer outside Europe, with production scheduled to begin in 2022.

Sime Darby Motors has been a partner of choice for Porsche in Malaysia for the last 11 years, being the exclusive distributor and retailer for the sports car brand here.

"This partnership with Porsche marks a coming of age of our relationship with the brand," Sime Darby group chief executive officer Datuk Jeffri Salim Davidson said.

"To be entrusted to assemble cars for one of the world's most admired sports car brands speaks volumes of the highly qualified and competent Malaysian talent we have at Sime Darby and our ability to provide meaningful value to our partners."

Porsche sales and marketing executive board member Detlev von Platen said Malaysia and Asean were a region of great potential, as the company was moving into a new era of mobility.

"This step now is part of a long-standing initiative to keep pace with rapidly evolving customer and market demands," von Platen said.

"Every Porsche assembled by Sime Darby will go through the same rigorous standards and processes as its European counterparts.

"Quality will be a shared key commitment between Porsche AG and Sime Darby to all our customers, in assembling Porsche vehicles," von Platen added.

New S-Class unveiled in Malaysia, setting benchmark of luxury limousine
By NST Business - December 15, 2021 @ 3:49pm

Mercedes-Benz Malaysia Sdn Bhd launches its highly-anticipated flagship vehicle, the new S-Class, on the back of rising optimism of a stronger sales recovery.

Quote:
KUALA LUMPUR: Mercedes-Benz Malaysia Sdn Bhd has today launched its highly-anticipated flagship vehicle, the new S-Class, on the back of rising optimism of a stronger sales recovery.

The S-Class is the world's best-selling luxury limousine and for the Malaysian market, Mercedes-Benz Malaysia will locally assemble the S 580 e plug-in hybrid to replace its predecessor at the company's plant in Pekan, Pahang.

Mercedes-Benz Malaysia vice president of passenger cars Michael Jopp said it had been a roller-coaster for the local automotive sector this year.

But he expects things to significantly improve in 2022, with Mercedes-Benz Malaysia possibly beating its 2019 sales, after an expected flat 2021 performance over 2020's.

"We thought that when we entered 2021 versus the previous year, the outlook would be very optimistic. And then with total lockdowns, the first one being relatively short but the second being very long, that led to some significant setbacks. Our dealers could not sell.

"If I take into consideration the development over the last two to three months, as customers responded to our launches, I am very confident about next year. I think we are maximising our sales potential right now," Jopp told reporters after the launch here today.

"Looking at our current orders, the response continues to be very, very strong and we are very confident going into next year. And I'm also happy about closing this year," he added.

Meanwhile, Jopp said the new S-Class had set the benchmark of luxury limousine, and was a testament of Mercedes-Benz Malaysia's commitment to reinforcing its local commitment to expand local foothold in the country.

"The vehicle underpins our claim to produce the best automobile in the world. This is where covetable luxury meets the greatest possible safety and highest level of comfort. The S-Class is the centerpiece of the brand, and stands for the fascination of Mercedes-Benz. It follows a long tradition that extends back to the beginnings of the Mercedes brand in the early 20th century," he added.

Mercedes-Benz Malaysia is assembling the first batch of 12 units of the S 580 e and expects to start delivering the limousines to its customers early next year.

Mercedes-Benz said well before the official designation S-Class, the models in the executive and luxury class were the mainstay of the Stuttgart-based company's portfolio and have always stood for luxury, comfort, safety and lifestyle.

The continuous ancestry of the S-Class begins with the model 220 (W 187) of 1951. The designation S-Class was officially introduced with the 116 series in 1972.

Since its market launch, more than four million S-Class limousines have been delivered to customers worldwide.

Locally, Mercedes-Benz has sold over 18,000 S-Class limousines since its first introduction in the late 1970s.

Shell invests in first offshore wellhead platform in Malaysia
By Azanis Shahila Aman - September 1, 2021 @ 3:01pm

KUALA LUMPUR: Royal Dutch Shell plc, through unit Sarawak Shell Bhd, has taken a final investment decision on the Timi gas development project off Sarawak.

The Timi development features Sarawak Shell's first wellhead platform in Malaysia that is powered by a solar and wind hybrid renewable power system.

Shell said it was developing the Timi project, located about 200km)off the coast of Sarawak, jointly with its partners Petronas Carigali Sdn Bhd and Brunei Energy Exploration.

"(We) look forward to delivering the project for Malaysia," the group said in a statement today.

Shell upstream director Wael Sawan said Timi, which is powered by a solar and wind hybrid power system, demonstrated the group's capabilities to innovate and deliver safe, reliable, and sustainable projects.

Sawan said this was in line with Shell's commitment to achieving net-zero emissions by 2050 in step with society.

"Shell is pleased to be able to progress this project in a competitive and responsible manner, as part of the vital role upstream plays in delivering Shell's strategy and in support of economic growth in Malaysia," he said.

Shell Malaysia chairman and senior vice president upstream Malaysia Ivan Tan said Timi reaffirmed Shell's commitment as a partner in powering progress for Sarawak and Malaysia.

The Timi development is designed to reach up to 50,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day (boe/d) peak production.

It will evacuate its gas to the F23 production hub via an 80km pipeline while supporting the future growth in the central Luconia area, off the coast of Sarawak.

The unmanned platform is about 60 per cent lighter than a conventional Tender Assisted Drilling (TAD) wellhead platform.

The project also includes the drilling of two wells.

"As one of the pioneers in building the country's energy industry, Shell Malaysia aims to lead in the country's energy transition by increasing investment in lower carbon energy solutions, while pursuing competitive and carbon resilient upstream investments," it said.

Porsche's entry into Malaysia to create high-quality jobs, niche tech capabilities, says Azmin
Bernama September 03, 2021 17:27 pm +08
Quote:
KUALA LUMPUR (Sept 3): Porsche AG’s decision to establish an assembly plant in Malaysia will lead to the creation of high-quality jobs and niche technology capabilities, which in turn will solidify the country’s National Investment Aspirations (NIA), said Senior Minister cum International Trade and Industry Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Azmin Ali.

This is based on Porsche’s reputation as a high-performance car manufacturer that demands state-of-the-art technology and precision engineering, he said in a statement today.

The renowned German automobile manufacturer, which specialises in high-performance sports cars, sport utility vehicles (SUVs) and sedans, recently announced that it will establish a production plant in Kedah in partnership with Sime Darby Bhd.

Mohamed Azmin said despite the challenging global economic landscape, Porsche strongly believes that Malaysia is an ideal gateway for the ASEAN market, making the Kedah production plant its first local assembly outside of Europe in more than 70 years of the company's history.

“The establishment of a manufacturing facility in Malaysia is deemed as a strategic decision by Porsche, signifying its commitment to building a long-term presence in the ASEAN region.

“The project is embedded in a comprehensive growth initiative launched in 2018 and reflects Porsche’s trust in our country’s strong position as the preferred manufacturing hub for globally renowned automotive original equipment manufacturers (OEMs),” he said.

The senior minister further said that Porsche’s decision in choosing Malaysia as its first production plant outside of Europe embodies the company’s confidence in Malaysia’s conducive ecosystem and strength to support its long-term growth.

“It also acknowledges the capability of our local talent of highly skilled engineers and technicians. We are very pleased to welcome Porsche to Malaysia and the Ministry of International Trade and Industry (MITI) as well as its agency, the Malaysian Investment Development Authority (MIDA), will continue to deliver our best in facilitating their endeavours here,” he said.

Moving forward, Mohamed Azmin said, the Malaysian government will ensure a conducive environment for foreign industry leaders to do business in the country through fiscal and non-fiscal incentives, coupled with Malaysia’s readiness in providing high-skilled talent as well as capable technology partners.

Dassault invests RM100m MRO facility in Subang Airport
by FAYYADH JAFFAR
Dassault Aviation from France to build regional business jet maintenance centre worth USD 24 million in Malaysia, operational in 2023

Quote:
FRENCH firm Dassault Aviation S.A. (Dassault) is investing up to RM100 million to set up a new MRO facility in Sultan Abdul Aziz Shah Airport or commonly known as Subang Airport.

The aviation company said the facility, to be positioned as Dassault Aviation’s Asia ‘Centre of Excellence’ for MRO, will be completed by Q4 2023.

This new facility will span 144,000 square feet and accommodate up to 45 aircraft per month. The one-stop centre for business jets will carry out line and heavy maintenance on Dassault, Bombardier and Gulfstream aircraft as well as interior refurbishment through Dassault’s ExecuJet MRO Services (ExecuJet), a subsidiary of Dassault Aviation.

The strategic collaboration will see Malaysia Airports Holdings Berhad (MAHB) subleasing 186,000 square feet of land to ExecuJet to build a new state-of-the-art MRO Hangar for private jets at Subang Airport, with space for hangarage, maintenance, workshops and corporate offices.

The partnership was made in conjunction with the inaugural Selangor Aviation Show, taking place at the Regional Aviation Centre, Subang Airport, from November 25 to 27, 2021, organised by Invest Selangor.

Speaking during a media conference held today, MAHB MD Datuk Iskandar Mizal Mahmood said that this new collaboration between Malaysia Airports and ExecuJet will enhance Malaysia as a regional business aviation hub.

He added that the new facility will be a key component of Malaysia Airports’ strategy to position Subang as a premier business aviation airport.

“The Sultan Abdul Aziz Shah Airport, commonly known as Subang Airport, has been pioneering the MRO for aerospace and aviation since 2005,” he said.

“It forms part of the group’s larger Aeropolis development, which focuses on the three core clusters of Aerospace & Aviation, Cargo & Logistics, and MICE & Leisure.

“The new MRO facility will be positioned as Dassault Aviation’s Centre of Excellence for MRO services in Asia, thus contributing to our ambition of making Subang Airport the most preferred aerospace and business aviation hub in Asia Pacific,” Iskandar said further.

The Aeropolis initiative attempts to create an aviation ecosystem that can attract foreign direct investments by global operators, as well as provide a platform for local companies to participate in the industry.

“Based on the current ecosystem that exists in Subang Airport right now, I am optimistic that the group is well on track to achieve this ambition,” he said, asserting that the new MRO facility will be a key component of MAHB’s strategy to position Subang Airport as a premier business aviation airport.

“Today, the Subang Airport aerospace ecosystem is recognised as an integral part of the global aerospace manufacturing and assembly value chain, as well as a regional MRO hub for general aviation.”

Iskandar also added that the new facility will open doors to more job opportunities and increase the skilled workforce in the country.

“Apart from attracting foreign investment and contributing to the local economy, we will be enhancing human capital by upskilling local talents with technical knowledge and new capabilities. ExecuJet will be investing heavily in training their local workforce.”

According to Iskandar, MAHB is a home for over 60 leading global and local operators, employing over 4,000 highly skilled technical workforces, as these operators collectively contributed RM5.7 billion in annual revenue in 2020, which accounts for almost 50% of the national aerospace revenue.

Bosch to invest more than 400 mln eur in chip production
Reuters October 29, 2021

Quote:
FRANKFURT Oct 29 (Reuters) - German technology group Robert Bosch (ROBG.UL) has earmarked more than 400 million euros ($467 million) for investments in microchip production in Germany and Malaysia next year to ease a global shortage.

A lack of chips for automakers has disrupted vehicle production around the world, with suppliers relying almost exclusively on chips from only a few manufacturers in Asia and the United States.

The largest part of Bosch's budget will be spent on a faster expansion of its Dresden, Germany factory for 300-millimeter wafers, which the group inaugurated in June, it said in a statement on Friday.

About 50 million euros will be invested at a site in Reutlingen near Stuttgart making 200-millimeter wafers, said the company, which also makes car parts and factory automation systems.

Another project to be funded will be the construction of a semiconductor testing facility in Penang, Malaysia, it added, without specifying the level of investment.

Intel (INTC.O), the biggest maker of processor chips for PCs and data centres, said last month it could invest up to 80 billion euros in Europe over the next decade. read more

Tech: RM8.5 bil Kulim expansion to play key role in AT&S’ growth story
Liew Jia Teng/The Edge Malaysia December 15, 2021 15:00 pm +08

Quote:
AS an increasing number of multinational corporations flock to Batu Kawan Industrial Park in Penang to set up their manufacturing plants, Vienna-listed Austria Technologie & Systemtechnik AG (AT&S) has instead chosen Kulim Hi-Tech Park in Kedah for its first production site in Southeast Asia.

The Austrian firm, which has a presence in Nanjangud, India; Chongqing and Shanghai in China; and Ansan, South Korea, is building a new state-of-the-art facility in Kulim with a planned investment of RM8.5 billion (about €1.7 billion) under Phase 1 of the project.

Construction work started in end-October and commercial operations are targeted to come on stream in 2024.

AT&S CEO Andreas Gerstenmayer says the Kulim plant is the group’s largest investment thus far in terms of initial investment for a single project. It is also the biggest single investment ever made by an Austrian company in Malaysia.

“If you look at our expansion in Chongqing, China, we have also invested a lot of money over the past 10 years. In terms of total investments, Kulim may not be the largest at the moment, but in terms of initial investment, it is definitely the largest because we will be investing €1.7 billion over a period of three years,” the 56-year-old German tells The Edge in an exclusive interview.

Gerstenmayer, who studied production engineering at Rosenheim University of Applied Sciences in Germany, held various management positions in the Siemens Group before becoming chairman of the management board of AT&S in 2010.

The first phase of the Kulim project is expected to lead to the creation of 6,000 new jobs, including for 4,500 blue-collar workers.

“To us, Chongqing is somehow the sister plant to the Kulim plant. In terms of workforce, we will probably see a similar size [at] these two plants. We expect them to collaborate as well as exchange technologies and know-how with each other,” he says.

AT&S is procuring 2,000 machines for its Kulim plant. Most of the high-tech equipment is sourced from Japan, the US, Taiwan and South Korea.

“It’s too early to talk about our Phase 2 investment in Kulim. Right now, we just want to focus on putting up our factory first. But yes, we might make further investments in the near future; the possibility is there,” he says.

Dörflinger Private Foundation and Androsch Private Foundation are the two largest shareholders of AT&S, with an 18% and 17.6% stake respectively. The remaining 64.4% shares are in free float.

Founded in 1987, Leoben-headquartered AT&S is one of world’s leading manufacturers of high-end printed circuit board (PCB) and integrated circuit (IC) substrates, serving industries such as consumer electronics, computer, communication, semiconductor, automotive, aviation, industrial and medical.

IC substrates provide connections between silicon dies and PCBs. They are composed of several layers and a supporting core in the middle. IC substrates contain drill holes and conductor paths that exceed the density of conventional PCBs. They are used for cloud edge computing, data centres and server farms as well as for consumer devices.
