David chipperfield architects has been selected to build the rolex USA headquarters in new york. the new 25-storey tower will be located on the corner of 5th avenue and 53rd street,
replacing the existing building that has been occupied by the luxury watch brand since the 1970s. the scheme was the winning entry submitted as part of an international competition,
and has been designed in accordance with LEED platinum guidelines to take into account sustainability and energy consumption.

The 165,000 square foot structure includes new office areas for rolex staff and tenants, as well as a new store at ground level. the first renderings of the project illustrate five
vertically stacked volumes, which have been offset to create outdoor terraces and roof gardens. according to its architects, the building will provide brand experiences across
a wide range of the company’s interests, becoming an important symbol of rolex’s commitment to quality, precision, and excellence.

'we are proud to have been selected to design the rolex USA headquarters building,’ says david chipperfield. ‘our team is committed to creating an exemplary building
befitting the heritage and culture of the rolex brand, as well as its prominent 5th avenue location.’ with offices in london, berlin, milan, and shanghai, david chipperfield architects
is currently working on projects across the globe, including a concert hall in scotland and the major renovation of a historic structure in venice.

That's fantastic!!! I've always thought that the existing building was an eyesore and a waste. This looks really nice.

This gives me a modern Daily News Building type vibe.

This is wonderful. And the current building sucks, so gigantic improvement, especially in such an ultra-prime location.

Much better than this!

Sorry if I missed it, but is there a time table for construction on this?

Also, bit off topic, but this is what Central Park Tower should have been. Imagine 1550 feet of this design

Pretty amazing that a mechanical watch company that has barely updated their line since the '80's (I'm a watch collector) can afford to build something like this in this location in 2019! Yes, I know they're the most well known brand in the world, but back in the 70's when the quartz watch came out, infinitely cheaper and more accurate, companies like Rolex were almost left for dead - if it wasn't for people like me that is, though I'm not a big fan of their style. I like their Tudor line though.

Good on them, looks great! I was in Switzerland not too long ago and good architecture is definitely coveted by all the Swiss watch brands. I'm not even terribly offended by the current building, but this is definitely an upgrade.

One can always pick up a fake Rolex and Gucci bags from the Nigerians that usually hang out on 5th during the weekend nights. Or can just go to Chinatown lol.

They've attempted to crackdown on it, but they are still out there.

Which is always nice, you have the legit shops, and than the illicit street shops, all on the same avenue.

Gotta love NYC!

Yep. And I think these brands know that knock offs aren't entirely bad for their business, there are plenty of people who buy an accurate fake Rolex etc. and realize they want the real thing when they're a bit older and have the disposable income. It ironically helps drive sales. I know this from the watch forums I belong to, and I may have done the same.... Allegedly

I just want to add this timeless NY'er peice by Gary Shteyngart about watch collecting:

Haven't seen a timetable for redevelopment yet, and walked by the site earlier today. Business as usual, but I imagine that a plan will be forthcoming.

I love it. It's a nice, fresh look for the area. Now we just have to see what Vornado has in store for 666 across the street. They were supposedly planning a new facade.

They need to demo that eyesore and build the 1,400 ft. tower, as originally planned.

I agree. They can nearly empty it, and, therefore, this would be a rare chance to raze it. A tower with boutique offices, a 7 star hotel, and hyper fancy condos would do very well.
