Is this just some oversight on the city that they didn't automatically do a 90 day hold in the first place? Or is it because it was already on the delay list once that they didn't catch it
I guess there was a mix-up with the address in the city's system, per Block Club.
Quote:
“A 90-day demolition hold had been entered in the city’s system for 1393 W. Lake St. instead of the address range of 1393-1399 W. Lake St.,” Strazzabosco said. “As there was no hold on the 1399 W. Lake address listed on the application, the Department of Buildings issued the demolition permit. The Department of Planning and Development’s Landmarks Division discovered the discrepancy and immediately requested the permit be revoked."

An odd one for sure.
You just witnessed Chicago magic in action. If it wasn't for the quick viral press about this demo it would have been down and gone before the "mistake" was noticed.

A more elevated scheme than "my contractor started demo without my knowledge" which has been used a few times in recent years on smaller buildings...
When I made a comment similar to this (bringing up concerns about “anti-racist” statements made by a woman in Woodlawn who wanted to keep that neighborhood a certain “color”) you told me to go back to Libertyville (I can pull up that quote if you’d like)
An earnest try at matching the tower - would be helped by a refinish of the tower itself.
Fortunately the tower still dwarfs the new mall, which does do a good job of blending into the shadows.

That lot (900 one) is owned by the same developer that just did the new Herman Miller office, and is just starting that hotel/office turned just office at 1025 Fulton.
I wonder if SOM was ever contacted for a proposal. Not that they're any less mega-size corporate, but their track record for aesthetic considerations is a lot stronger. (And they'd possibly have some emotional motivation given that they're the building's designers.)
^^looks like they put boards down to allow heavy equipment to run to St. Regis with trees without breaking up the concrete. I believe that construction on GEMS 2 is still stopped.
