The sun orbits the earth, the earth doesn't orbit the sun. Please don’t bring up that nonsense in this thread.

I agree this isn't the thread to discuss MSG. But it is absolutely an open question what will happen to MSG, including a potential move from the toilet that sits atop Penn. To say with such confidence otherwise, as if you have inside information or a crystal ball, comes across as belligerent.

It’s not an open question, especially as it pertains to 15 Penn. MSG has said they aren’t moving, and in fact, can’t be forced to move. If people want to hold on to the idea that they will move, that’s good for them. Some people believe in Santa, or at least did until they were old enough to understand the difference between want and reality.

So, if anyone wants to discuss the Penn 15 site, this is where we are.

They absolutely can be. And you know that.

But besides that what's with the wacky ideas for random stuff on sites like this? They just expect it to take so long that it's justified?

This site has always been seen as a placeholder, a moneymaker in the interim. That's why the hotel stayed open as long as it did. Only covid forced the closure. Now they intend to put the site to use until the tower can be built.

Vornado serves up new pitch at Hotel Pennsylvania site
Tennis courts, event space and 10-story billboard floated for 15 Penn Plaza

By TRD Staff
Feb 15, 2024

Quote:
Months after Vornado Realty Trust abandoned plans for a casino at the former Hotel Pennsylvania site, the firm is floating a more open-ended pitch for the open space.

The developer is planning an 80,000-square-foot event space for 15 Penn Plaza, Crain’s reported. The proposal is a significant pivot from the 56-story, 2.7 million-square-foot office tower Vornado described for the site, which would have included 84,000 square feet of outdoor space.

Instead, Vornado’s “Penn Platform” would occupy half a block between Sixth and Seventh avenues, and West 32nd and West 33rd streets. It would be dominated by a 150-foot high, 197-foot wide billboard, which would take up 10 stories. It would stretch from West 32nd to West 33rd streets and take up the entire backside of 100 West 33rd Street.

I am so glad Vornado ran a historic hotel into the ground for two decades as a "parking lot for future development" so that we could have an empty lot for god knows how long (or if we are lucky one day perhaps one of the ugliest towers New York has ever hosted).

Idk personally I actually began liking the tower after the official renders came out. Does this mean the tower is cancelled because if so that's a bummer.

Vornado didn't run that hotel into the ground. But that hardly matters, as COVID would have killed it anyway.

No. Vornado has been saying they aren't going to start construction now. They are going to utilize that lot in the meantime, as the City would allow. But there's only so much you can do beside some type of open air market, or vendors, like you see on other vacant sites. I remember Extell's now rising 740 8th Avenue having a vendor market for quite a while until that project got going. None of this is unusual.

In fact, just last year they opened pickleball courts on the site of 360 10th Avenue. That project is supposed to start this year or the next.

A Vornado spokesperson said the renderings in the presentation were for “conceptual purposes.”

“We are currently considering a number of potential interim options for the Hotel Pennsylvania site,” the spokesperson said.

If Vornado’s new plans are in line with existing permits known as a general project plan, they could move quickly, said Casey Berkovitz, press secretary at the Department of City Planning. “It makes sense that in the short term they’d want to do something to the space,” he said.

The brochure states that the flattened space offers a “diverse range of scenarios for brand activations and events,” including “basketball activation with NCAA-sized courts, a tennis brand, a large covered tent setup or an outdoor concert venue.

Subsidized affordable housing across the street from North America's busiest train station and a thicket of transit links... Makes sense to me... Genius!

Some people really just don't understand how anything works. I suppose its still not as bad as a contemplation sculpture garden.

They don't understand the concept of "interim" use. It's not like you could just waver your hand, and housing would appear. It would take years to build, and that's not even counting the time it would take to get the zoning for it.

Nothing going on here at the moment. The site has taken on kind of a Times Square feel with the bright signage directly across the street from what is a spectacular new entrance to MSG and 2 Penn Plaza.

But Vornado wants to get something out of the site while it awaits development into a supertall office building.

A look at some of the ideas...
