Was going to do an update, but the viewing panels get dirtier by the day. So I have to settle for this vista that won't last forever...

Will the lower portion of this be as wide as the MetLife building?

No. This old google aerial will give you an idea of the dimensions between the two...

Got it.

Damn. The MetLife building has to be the widest skyscraper in the city, no?

There are a few, 30 Rock, Chase Manhattan, shorter towers like the 6th Ave buildings. I put them all in that category.

The new beast at 50 Hudson and the Spiral will add new dimensions.

^ 1 Penn Plaza is really wide too.

Edit: And the Hilton Midtown. I think it's over half a block wide.

The Metlife (surprisingly) is wider than the Empire State Building (had to look it up).

I will probably wake up in the morning with more buildings to compare.
I never really thought about building width.
All my life I've been obsessed with building height.

Another wider building then Metlife is 55 Water street (About 325 ft wide vs 300), 55 Water also happens to be the largest building by square feet in the city, MetLife is close behind though.

An oldie showing the construction of 55 Water. One of the biggest indeed. Metlife, 55 Water, and ESB are up there in terms of raw sq ft.

3.5 mil-sqft for 55 Water.

On a side note, look at that farm land called JC. How it has changed.

I really like how JC compliments Downtown Manhattan with the Canyon effect from the Hudson.
This establishes NY as an American city at the International level.

Does anyone know which city in the world has the most number of towers currently under construction?

I wish ! . . hardly "great" . . some, TBone, yes . .
I'd agree there's a lot of large activity . .
thankfully, this KPF is very high quality design . .
very big in NYC confidence, character, & vision . .

in reference to buildings mentioned above . .
despite what most critics say, . .
the Pan Am (Met Life) is indeed a solid part of that . .
big NYC confidence, character, & design vision . .

the bland, bulky, not tall, "so what" 55 Water, is decidedly not . .
neither are the new blocky-block Ingles design "disasters" . .
the tall, but also dimwittedly & flagrantly blocky, 2 WTC . .
certainly isn't of big NYC confidence, character, & design vision . .
& the tall, sort of a spiral thing, . . but much more of a blocky lump -
("""the Spiral""") is hardly visionary either . .

but strike up every & whatever band for this one . .
no diminishment whatsoever here . .
oh I could do a bit of picking at it . . just a little . .
but there's plenty of satisfaction here for now . .
just don't go mutilating the good parts . .
so we end up with glass box mediocrity . .

Where did those two cross sections come from? I didn't see them on the zoning pdf
