The older skyline, especially Downtown, was more perfectly proportioned. And you didn't have as many tall towers as today. The Manhattan skyline eventually grew and filled out to the point where you could say it swallowed itself. Add to that the fact that office buildings required much larger floorplates than those early days, and the classic romantic skyline of New York was doomed to it's success. That's why the rise of the supertall age in the city is so important. The towers are high enough to rise above the plateau. One Vanderbilt in particular gives us that classic, skyline shaping tower that New Yorkers and people from around the world see as symbols of the city itself.

They are getting very close to the crown with the glass and terra cotta curtain wall. Will they finish this before they start on the crown or will they work concurrently on both? The speed of this tower construction is amazing. Every week there is noticeable difference on the beauty.

I really like the night lighting where the tip of the spire is so intense!

Would it be toofar-fetched to say that this beautiful thing is 20 years overdue design-wise at least?

When taken in consideration of the MidTown East rezoning concept, IMO this would be a definite yes.

As far as something that gives NY love to and leaves its mark on the NY skyline, I would go many more years than that. There have been a lot of better designed buildings, but none so far that have captured the essence of the NY skyline, meaning build above and beyond your neighbors to the point they seem insignificant in comparison, with a crown that at least seems unchallenged. I mean, how do you build so tall so close to the classic Chrysler, and in direct competition with the ESB? This is how you do it. Towers like 30 Hudson and BofA don't quite do it. We have at least a few years to enjoy it as is before other nearby towers start crashing the party.

Lost in the awe at its height is 1VB's impact at the street level. It will do so much to bring light and life to a block that was once dark, unadorned and depressing. For those of you lucky enough to see One Bryant Park rise, think of how that part of town felt when the Drake sat in its place.

Clear glass and expansive, towering lobbies do so much good for the street. Now consider that One Vanderbilt employs such careful design and exquisite materials...I really hope it sets a trend for future large scale developments and the consideration for how they impact ground level life.

How incredibly lucky are we skyscraper enthusiasts that 1 Vandy's spire is lit up before they even finish enclosing the building! When I first saw an evening shot with the glowing spire, I thought the photo was doctored! This is a construction team that obviously cares about their project's impact on the skyline.
