It is good to see activity in this town.

Thanks, the last 15 years have been busy, with more to come.

A couple of opinion articles from two local news organizations about the good and bad issues with all the new development in the city:

Looks like the Harold's Square project will officially get under way "soon".

Even though higher education (and the students who come with it) are the lifeblood of Ithaca, not everyone is happy with college students living in their neighborhood. An article from the Ithaca Voice:

https://ithacavoice.com/2017/10/city...ng-south-hill/

For the record, I grew up in the "student ghetto" of the Collegetown neighborhood. Loved it.

Some interesting (and at least on controversial) proposals seeking New York State development grant money (from the Ithaca Voice):

https://ithacavoice.com/2017/10/down...opment-grants/

Not sure I agree with the 2nd project the city selected to be an applicant. Here's more about that project (from the Ithaca Voice):

Yep, the city has been on a nice development streak for a decade now. Not easy to do in Upstate New York.

Not exactly a big project, but the completed renovation of an Aldi market in the city's Northside (an under served part of town) is good news for the local residents. From the Ithaca Voice:

https://ithacavoice.com/2017/10/gall...fresh-upgrade/

Also from the Ithaca Voice is news of a proposed shopping plaza in the Village of Lansing:

https://ithacavoice.com/2017/10/new-...anned-lansing/

A couple of articles from the Ithaca Voice about two Ithaca area projects.

First is a mini neighborhood proposal in Trumansburg (10 miles outside Ithaca). Quite a bit of push-back on this one:

https://ithacavoice.com/2017/10/inhs...sburg-housing/

Here's another article about Harold's Square starting demolition, and finally getting off the ground with construction:

https://ithacavoice.com/2017/10/haro...ting-underway/

And here is a link to one of the more active developers in Ithaca (and beyond):

Check out the "On the Boards" section.

On a different note, my old hood (Collegetown) has received some potentially disturbing news this week for current landlords and future development.
All articles are from the Ithaca Voice:

New building codes:

https://ithacavoice.com/2017/10/buil...town-projects/

Though the Nines is an iconic structure in Collegetown, I'm not sure why anyone would want to get involved with it (cost prohibitive):

https://ithacavoice.com/2017/10/nine...ect-cancelled/

Cornell University springs some surprising news which will hopefully help the housing affordability issue, but may cause worry among the Collegetown landlords:

https://ithacavoice.com/2017/10/corn...add-2000-beds/

BTW, thanks to SSPer Visiteur.

Ithacating updates on a couple of the larger housing projects in the city.

First is Hancock Street affordable housing which is nearing completion:

https://ithacating.com/2017/10/17/21...update-102017/

Second is the Maplewood graduate housing project for Cornell. Plenty of pics included:

https://ithacating.com/2017/10/17/ma...update-102017/

Good stuff.

Nice summary of what's going on right now in downtown Ithaca. The article is from the Ithaca Voice, and the pictures of each project are listed before the project description:

Nice little rundown. Does the author have a background in engineering or architecture? Kinda sounds like it, with the information about the foundations, geotech reports, soil borings, timber lagging, etc - you don't usually see that language in a project rundown like this.

I like this sentence from near the start of the article:

Quote:
Since googling "Ithaca skyline" generally brings up Cornell photos, a more prominent downtown would be an asset if only to teach Google's algorithms that Cornell is not all of Ithaca.
I'm a little jealous of Ithaca - a city with less than half the population of my hometown, but with a skyline that feels twice as big. Be proud!

Funny you should ask about the author. I met him through SSP (his name is Visiteur) when he was attending Cornell and visited this site. We met up when I went back to Ithaca for a visit. He's a great guy, and actually works as a meteorologist in Upstate New York. His blog (Ithacating in Cornell Heights) is one of my must views, and he also writes development articles for the Ithaca Voice. He's a bright guy who has an attachment for the city and seems to love the area as much as I do.

Gotta say Ithaca's recent building boom over the last 15 years has made my boyhood dreams come true.

Speaking of the Ithacating blog, here's a couple of recent entries about downtown activity.

First up is Press Bay Alley expansion. It's a fairly recent development and rather unique for Ithaca, though I know other cities have similar locations. their facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/PressBayAlley/
The next big event: http://wizardingweekend.com/

The blog entry:
https://ithacating.com/2017/10/25/pr...update-102017/

Next is a big project just off the Commons, City Center. This should be a real asset to the downtown area, and bring hundreds of additional residents to downtown.
https://ithacating.com/2017/10/26/ci...update-102017/

Here's a picture of the site I took on my last visit back in June:
