Greenwich Street is also where the last unresolved battle over the future of the World Trade Center is being fought. The city and the Lower Manhattan Development Corporation favor the construction of housing on a parcel known as Site 5, where the Deutsche Bank building stood. The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey believes the site should to be used for offices, a conference center and a hotel....

Cash-strapped Greek Orthodox church stops work on WTC shrine

Severe financial mismanagement has prompted the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America to stop work on its St. Nicholas shrine at the World Trade Center.

The archdiocese, which raised $37 million in donations to pay for the Santiago Calatrava-designed shrine, ran out of funds, the New York Times reported. “Effective Dec. 5, 2017, Skanska USA has terminated its contract with the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America on account of GOA’s defaults in making payments,” Thomas Perry, the director of the project, wrote in a letter sent to subcontractors.

The Byzantine-inspired structure, which is to be sheathed in marble, was projected to cost $20 million when the design was announced in 2013. But that number ballooned to $35 million by the time the ground was broken in 2015. When the church’s 50-foot dome was completed in 2016, the figure was $40 million. As of this month, the cost had reached $78 million — with only $49 million pledged.

This is why Calatrava shouldn't be allowed to practice architecture. It's supposed to be a discipline that merges creativity with practicality. Calatrava always falls short on the latter.

Yeah in terms of finacial feasibility, his projects break records. The PATH station (AKA Oculus) downtown is the worlds most expensive station. $4 Billion for that. 2 WTC if it lands a tenant in 2018, which looks likely, I expect will be similar in the price tag. 1 WTC alone broke the record as the most expensive office building. 2 WTC should follow in its footsteps.

You'd think an accountant that has a tick of smashing the 0 button was just adding 0's at the end of the financial statement rows.

But its nothing new. The whole WTC complex has been a total failure from a financial perspective and time-table perspective. Now Hudson Yards, they have their shit down. They know how to build a mini-city on schedule and attract tenants.

Not to mention the $32 a ticket for the deck, which isn't even open to the atmosphere. A rip-off, just like the whole complex (honorable mentions to the great cladded spire that was valued-engineered for 1 WTC).

The Hudson Yards is a special case. Related wouldn't be able to do what they did there in another part of the city. It's a balance in the development of that whole project overall, with most of the tenants taking space in the first phase buying that space instead of leasing.

It was originally a simple little structure. There was really no need for anything extravagant here, but it is what it is.

Without getting into any "religious" argumentation on this matter (which I can do, believe you me), the temple structure......

i.e. "temple" versus "church" technicality. See what I mean??? ......

is a matter of "it is what it should be".

So the group that advocated to have the church rebuilt now don't have the funds to rebuild it. I was wondering why work had stopped. I really must try to understand how and why this happens, but a Calatrava design was probably one factor.

Another factor is the fact that it sits on top of one of the most security intensive spaces in the city. The roof had to be designed to support the church. A simple structure would have benefited both parties.
