Vibrant place and still lots of construction happening. Cycling seems a major part of the culture. Maybe the beautiful setting helps. But flooding is a regular occurrence? Those warning signs along the river are a bit weird.

Beautiful, and one thing pops out of head and, is it allowed to smoke cigarettes in the forest, you know the wood zone? by law or by self-awareness

What a fantastic set of shots of a region we don't see enough of.

I hope to take my Moto down that way one of these days.

Cheers

There is more construction on the way downtown for several high profile developments.

Cycling is very popular here. Boise is a City of Bikes, we have one of the highest percentages of people who bike to work. The Boise River Greenbelt follows the river through the city on both sides for nearly 30 miles. More and more bike lanes, including elevated and protected lanes are being added downtown and across the city. There are over 200 miles of singletrack trails in the Foothills and within minutes of downtown. We also are home to some Olympian cyclists and Boise is considered one of the best cities for mountain biking.

Bogus Basin, the local ski mountain above the city has some amazing forest trails accessible via the ski lifts.

This event is taking place later this month and is one of the finest cycling criteriums in the nation.

Flooding does not happen every year, but mainly when the snowpack is deep in the mountains. The city puts up those signs to warn people to stay out of the river when it's at and above flood stage. The river is popular for trout fishing, kayaking, floating, and there are always those who decide to attempt the impossible and end up drowning or needing rescued.

What's the history of that old building with the totem pole in front of it?

the building was built in the 1930s and housed a number of businesses over the years.

in the 1960s it was home to the Totem Insurance Agency, and that's about the same time the totem pole appeared, but nobody has been able to authenticate who installed it or where it came from. there are rumors that the totem pole was created by the Tlingit tribe in Alaska and shipped to Boise in the 60s, but what's probably closer to truth is that it was just a gimmick to promote the insurance agency, even though there's no data to support that claim, either.

for the last 25 or so years, the building has been home to a local Italian restaurant called Papa Joe's. and while the totem pole has nothing to do with the restaurant, it's become an icon and will probably stay put for the foreseeable future.

Amazing photos! I can attest from prior visits that Boise is a bike mecca.

Typically, if the fire danger in the forests is elevated, camp fires and smoking are prohibited. I rarely see anyone smoking cigarettes in our national forests. I think and hope most people are self-aware to not smoke when in the woods.

Some of the finest singletrack anywhere, more bike lanes added each year, and the paved Boise River Greenbelt is a jewel. E bikes are extremely popular in Boise.

Thanks for the scenic photos. I really hope Boise can hold onto its unique balance of nature and urbanity as it continues to grow.
