KOCH: Industries Minister Elamaram Karim said here on Monday that the Government planned to set up an electronics hardware manufacturing hub each in Kochi and Thiruvananthapuram and that the Kerala State Industrial Development Corporation (KSIDC) was in the process of acquiring land for the proposed facilities.
The Minister was speaking after laying the foundation for the Kalamassery Hi-Tech Electronics Hardware Park with the status of a special economic zone being promoted jointly by Kerala State Industrial Infrastructure Development Corporation (Kinfra) and the Kochi-based NeST group.
The Minister said that 250 acres each were needed for the proposed hubs to get them product specific special economic zone status. In Kochi, the KSIDC had already located sufficient land for the project, he said.
The Minister said the Government was committed to reviving the State-promoted Keltron and to restore it to its old glory. For the purpose, the Government had drawn up a proposal for a one-time settlement of all the bank dues of the company. A sum of Rs.7.5 crore would be paid as the first instalment this year. The rest of the dues would be paid in three years. With this settlement, Keltron would come out of the red, the Minister said.

He also said that the Board of Directors of the Central public sector National Thermal Power
Corporation had cleared a proposal from the State Government to float a joint venture with Transformers and Electricals Kerala (TELK) for a world-class transformer manufacturing facility. The State Cabinet had also cleared the handing over of the Thiruvananthapuram-based Hi-Tech Industries to the Union Government for the manufacture of defence-related products.
The Government was confident that an IT-based Smart City would be established in Kochi soon. A digital city was also being planned in Kochi as a joint venture between Kinfra and the newly floated Kerala Infrastructure Development Company, he said.
The Minister said Grasim Industries had proposed setting up a knowledge-based industry township in Mavoor. There were a lot of enquiries from investors and that Kerala's potential would be
fully realised, he added.
The Minister also announced that the Union Minister of State for Commerce Jayram Ramesh had approved in principle a proposal for setting up Kerala's second rubber park in Ranni taluk of Pathanamthitta district.
The rubber park was being proposed as a joint venture between Rubber Board and Kinfra. The State Government was also hopeful of reopening Travancore Rayons and South Indian Wire Ropes soon, he said.
N. Jahangir, Managing Director of NeST group, welcomed the gathering. K. Chandran Pillai, MP., K. Babu, A.M. Yousef and V.K. Ebrahim Kunju, MLAs, and V.M. Arifa, chairperson of Kalamssery Municipality, offered felicitations.
A.S. Suresh Babu, Managing Director of Kinfra, made a brief presentation on Kinfra projects.
T. Balakrishnan, Principal Secretary, Industries, and C.J. Mathew, Development Commissioner, Cochin Special Economic Zone, also spoke.
