Not to mention the adjacent communities are pretty white (adjacent areas of Sunnyside are still heavily Irish and LIC is heavily gentrified white/Asian professional).

dumb beyond belief is still not dumber than what comes out of trump though.

i mean at least it didn't advocate murder:

Speaking at a rally in Wilmington, North Carolina, Trump said, "Hillary wants to abolish, essentially abolish, the second amendment [the right to have a gun].” He continued “if she gets to pick her judges, nothing you can do, folks. Although the second amendment people, maybe there is, I don’t know. But I’ll tell you what, that will be a horrible day.”

EDC to Hold ‘Digital Town Hall Meeting’ On Sunnyside Yard Masterplan Wednesday, Plan Faces Heavy Opposition

Quote:
Officials will be releasing a draft of the Sunnyside Yard master plan Wednesday—although they won’t be unveiling it at a traditional town hall meeting.

The preliminary draft will be showcased online via a digital town hall that will take place on Dec. 4 at 7 p.m. Participants, who are required to register, will learn about the plan via their computer screens and speakers—as opposed to going to a traditional meeting hall.

The Economic Development Corp, which is organizing the online meeting and is quarterbacking the massive development plan, said that the webinar would provide the public with a greater opportunity to learn about the plans and provide feedback.

The overarching plan for the 180-acre site will involve decking over the yards– and potentially constructing tens of thousands of apartments, office space, green space and a transportation network.

The masterplan is expected to be completed before the end of winter and will provide a framework that underpins all aspects of the development for decades to come, including the various phases and timeline.

The webinar will be the fourth public meeting dealing with massive site this year and will be the first to be held online. The last meeting on Sept. 16 at Aviation High School in Long Island City was temporarily disrupted when dozens of protesters turned up to blast the plans.

I am dumbfounded why there are NIMBY's fighting this project. For one it is a rail yard not a park, the other is none of these people fighting the project will be alive to see the fruition of this project (100 year build out).

AOC resigns from Queens megadevelopment steering committee

Quote:
Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez resigned from the steering committee planning the development of a 180-acre Queens site after being pressured by community groups.

In a letter today, AOC said she quit the Sunnyside Yard Steering Committee because not enough feedback was being incorporated into the New York Economic Development Corporation’s vision for the massive project, which opponents fear will cause gentrification.

“This feedback, both from community members and from my office, includes but is not limited to community land trusts, truly affordable housing, and public and green infrastructure of the scale necessary to meet our 21st century housing and environmental justice challenges,” AOC wrote to the EDC, the main economic-development arm of the de Blasio administration.

Officials at the agency acknowledged AOC’s resignation Friday afternoon. In a statement, a spokesperson said, “Sunnyside Yard presents an opportunity to build a stronger New York for generations to come that includes more open space, transit, affordable housing, jobs and green infrastructure in Western Queens. This planning process has always put community engagement at the center.”

Groups opposing development in Queens, including the Democratic Socialists of America, had targeted the de Blasio administration and the development’s steering committee, a roster of community leaders and elected officials, including AOC.

[...]

City officials hope to establish a mix of affordable housing, schools, parks and open spaces over the rail yard, situated between Sunnyside and Long Island City. The administration has been trying to portray the planning process as inclusive to avoid the kind of opposition that killed plans for an Amazon campus in nearby Long Island City.

The ambitious project, if it comes to pass, would not happen until after Mayor Bill de Blasio’s term expires at the end of next year.

The EDC has a hand in efforts to develop Willets Point in Queens and Hunts Point in the Bronx, the aborted Amazon campus and the Brooklyn Army Terminal in Sunset Park.

I identify as a social democrat and all I can say is thank god. A record of helping torpedo not one* but two massive investments in her district is not going to be helpful.

*while the Amazon bid and impact was not perfect, I believe as many do the pros outweighed the cons.

Hopefully AOC will lose her seat. What she did with Amazon was terrible. The damage was beyond Amazon as well. A lot of projects or planned projects were shelved thanks to her. With all of the extra demand, we missed out on a lot of towers for LIC. All the extra support business and economic output that would of resulted in the next 10 years. Beyond Amazon essentially.

A lot of folks like to think the loss was just Amazon, but it was way more than that. But yeah, less involvement from AOC when it comes to adding much needed supply and jobs to the area, the better.

I think as a person, she means well, but when she interjects her ideas into business and economic growth, terrible things happen.

AOC is horrible. And I agree with many of her national political positions. But she's been a disaster for her district.

Thank God she's bowing out of Sunnyside Yards; she's done enough damage already.

Blaming AOC for the demise of a large scale development in NYC is like blaming a cough when it's the flu that's actually killing me. Her losing her seat would not matter one iota to the prospects for this development, others, or rezones in general.

How the city approaches land use and development decisions has been fundamentally broken for a good while. This is just another example. The run at rezoning SoHo is anther disaster in progress where a bunch of loud rich assholes will kill that because they think their pocket of the city should never (ever) change and want to keep everybody but themselves out.

So sad that a powerful city like NY would take 100 years to finish this project,

China would have built like 10000 of these in a few years.. Wow, NYC is really declining if it takes 100 fucking years to redev a smallish railyard area.

Europe would have redeveloped this gaping hole in the city by now. This is not even that big an area. China builds like 1000s of areas like this a year. London redeveloped a whole blighted area in a few years for teh Olympics... NY just trolling us bad. Too much focus on catering to fancy oligarch towrs and rich corporations (banks in HY, JP morgan, etc) instead of improving the city.

Build a nice park, or something in the mean time. Host the damn Olympics on it. Build some cultural ameities or pull a Valencia or host the fucking world expo. Build a new convention center and close Javitz. Oh, but the pooor suitse would have to go to the "hellish" Queens to attend their conference, oh the humanity!!!!

What a waste of time that could have been used to brighten up a very ugly area. I hope some kiddies here will get to see it when they are 100, but you'll have to be a baby right now so you won't be reading this forum! Sad thing. Let's hope for life extension.

You seem like an economic horse with blinders on. That's all you can see. Skylines, buildings, Amazon, jobs, etc... just like Juan Trippe saw aircraft routes, and Pierpont Morgan saw smart investment (shame about the horse and cart, but he was a dick anyway)… very unimportant things in the big picture that is sea level rise and climate change. NY is facing a disaster when the water comes up, and more poeople in the city isn't the answer. NY will suffer and losses will be greater than any Amazon.

MOAR BUILDINGS: yawn, more LIC boxes you mean with no design merit. A sea of what would be dull condo towers catering to boring techies would have nothing at all to get me excited.. no loss.

AOC could be the savior of NY. Green revolution could basically stop the coming floods.

Nota rich fucker, but why on earth did you want to rezone the cutest areas of NY like SoHo? Some things shouldn't change honestly. Has central Paris changed? Has Rome? No, some things should just be left alone. There are countless "arm pits " of the city that you should focus on before SoHo for god's sake.

It's like somebody was recently suggesting we sould rezone Greewhich village. Say, what?

$$$$$ flashing

WRT housing the SoHo rezoning proposal would merely allow vacant lots to be built to comparable density and certain under-developed plots to do the same with caveats. Also let buildings convert to residential from other uses. SoHo may look seamlessly "cute" but there is some one story trash that could easily be gotten rid of for 5 or 6 floor residential buildings that would conform with the neighborhood.

The housing burden shouldn't just fall on the "armpits" of the city. Not letting appropriate density be built in the rich areas is a big problem which is manifesting in now the so-called armpits kicking back at rezoning in their own areas. The end result is simply less housing for everybody.

Not true. If there were no Trump, there would be no AOC. If there were no AOC, there would be Amazon in LIC. Her celebrity opposition sunk the project.

thankfully in the end it looks like nyc still grabbed up around half that amazon work anyway, to be scattered around hudson yards. nashville got the rest, which is going to a hideous office park development. meh.

Pockets of opposition had been growing in recent years so Trump or no Trump another politician would have seen the opportunity same as her. When I heard that Amazon picked NYC I was pretty sure the contest would blow up in their faces. Contrast their approach with Google's who just leases or buys what they need relatively quietly.

weeeellll i know what you mean, but personally i wouldn't say google comes in quietly at all when they came into the port authority bldg guns blazing, bought up my spouse's company, so much for that walking across the street commute to work ha ha, then eventually laid every one of them off. water under the bridge, but still.

I meant that generally most of NYC has no idea there are Google offices, where they are, how many people work there, or all of the above. Let alone that they are pretty aggressively expanding their city footprint.

You have ZERO evidence for this. Considering the general swing left predating Trump with the highly competitive campaign of Sanders in 2015-2016 is more than enough to assert you're wrong in your assement. I have little doubt she would have won that district even if President Hillary Clinton was our current reality - and man I wish it was.
