How many cities still have downtown department stores?

Does your city still have a downtown department store? Not a discount retailer but an actual big name retailer. What is It? Did they all close? What did you have and when?

Portland has one remaining city center department store, the regions flagship Nordstrom. We had a Macy's (previously Meier and Frank) as recently as 2017 and a full size Saks Fifth Avenue which closed in 2010. Can you imagine a Saks in Portland now??

Most in downtown Pittsburgh closed within the past 10 years.

Macy's (Kaufmann's), Horne's, Gimbel's, Lord & Taylor, Saks Fifth Ave, Frank & Seder, Rosenbaum's, Boggs & Buhl... all gone.

There's a Target and a Burlington, does they count?

Some medium-sized upscale clothing stores like Brooks Brothers and Larrimorr's remain, and some smaller clothing boutiques, but that's it I think.

Yeah im thinking mid-scale or better. I guess upscale boutiques count too. Let's have those also. Portlands cbd, high end retailers are currently Tiffany's, Gucci, Louis Vuitton, Tory Burch, Golden Goose. Guh bye Brooks Bros and Coach. Im sure ill think of some others. I don't know how to classify REI. We have a fairly successful location still as well as stand alone Patagonia and North Face stores in the pearl.

These cities each have at least one left:

New York
Chicago
Philadelphia
Boston
Washington
Minneapolis
San Francisco

I think Atlanta has a couple of department stores but I don't think they're in locations that fit the definition of "downtown"(?).

Sacramento still has its downtown Macy's. The mall it anchored is long gone though.

Nashville's last department store closed in the late eighties with the closure of the Church Street Center mall downtown, to my knowledge. After a period of several decades retail is starting to come back though, slowly but surely. There is a Whole Foods now, and rumors of a Super Target, although neither are department stores, obviously. The closest thing we have right now is a Nike store lol, which is pretty far off too. I have my doubts that there will ever be a full fledged department store downtown ever again.

Downtown Cincy has a Saks. Probably the #1 under-rated downtown in the midwest and weirdly the most visited midwestern urban core outside of St. Louis for me during the pandemic era.

St. Louis had a downtown Macys within recent history where I bought clothes as a working adult but its gone.

Downtown Los Angeles still has a Macy's, of which the location was originally an LA department store called The Broadway.

All the original old LA department stores from the early 20th Century are gone (Robinson's, The Broadway, Bullock's, May Company). The current downtown mall called FIGat&7th was originally called Seventh Market Place and opened in the 1980s with 2 anchor department stores, Bullock's and May Company.

Macy's in Philadelphia (formerly Wanamaker's) is still worth a trip inside to see a classic Dept. Store.

The pipe organ inside is considered the largest functioning musical instrument in the world

Most kids who grow up in and around Philadelphia have a lot of nostalgia for the Christmas Light Show

Last time I was there it was decently busy and in general seems to have a good impression with the general public.

Yes!
The largest one is probably (don't quote me) at the Eaton Centre in downtown Toronto. The men's department even had a working bar inside the middle of the department (pre-Covid). Generally too pricey for me but a nice addition to downtown Toronto.

Winnipeg, for ex, would probably salivate at the thought of getting a Nordstrom considering their flagship Hudson's Bay store closed.

A total of six Nordstrom-owned stores operate in the Greater Toronto Area and are offering curbside pickup as part of the initiative. That includes three full-line stores at CF Toronto Eaton Centre, Yorkdale and CF Sherway Gardens in Toronto, as well as three off-price Nordstrom Rack stores at 1 Bloor Street East in Toronto as well as at Vaughan Mills in Vaughan and at Heartland Town Centre in Mississauga.

That must be the Saks on the Lower Meirion side of City Ave, 7 miles from Center City. Definitely an odd location but overall, the surrounding area is very wealthy. Its address is 2 Bala Plaza - it's basically a retail anchor within a suburban office complex. It's still open by the way.
