It's covered up by the Georgia Pacific building, like the Bank of America building is covering up the former AT&T building. You can see a part of Westin here behind the GP building:

^Absolutely jaw dropping... and I'll bet that 90% of Americans have never even heard of it.

Yep, it's part of the biggest city in the world, and alone has more skyscrapers and supertalls than NYC (not counting the other conjoined cities).
A few people who know it think it's still an industrial parody of HK when now it's grown into the bigger, more livable, more powerful city to its neighbour.

old vid, but the bit from 3:00 onwards is the closest to Coruscant Ive seen, whilst 4:12 is very Bladerunner:

Few people know it's also a coastal city with resorts

Astonishing... wow... it boggles the mind to think about the fact that Shun Hing Square, which coincidentally has always been a favorite skyscraper of mine, was really the dominant building on the skyline up until about six or so years ago. I'm not sure the world has ever seen a highrise explosion even close to what we've seen over the past five years in Shenzhen. I've been to many corners of China, but never made it down that way. I have decided it is an absolute must visit... what is that region known as? Surely there is a name for that entire Guangzhou-Shenzhen-Hong Kong-Dongguan-Foshan-Macau megaregion?

The Pearl River City is the conjoined contiguous city, now considered the world's largest (pop 42 million). Hong Kong is not included as it has a border and isn't contiguous, separated by a stretch of paddy fields.

The Pearl River Delta is the metro region (55-78 million depending on where you stop counting). It's increasingly known as the Greater Bay Area in the similarity it has to San Francisco (Shenzhen is the Silicon Valley of China).

What's most interesting about Shenzhen is its 'urban villages', the semi-legal midrises built in the 90s, aka handshake houses where blocks are so close together neighbours can do that. Across China these urban villages have been demolished in the world's biggest demolition drive in history, and replaced by the swanky skylines so pictured.

Shenzhen with so little history is the only city saving them. They're famed for their streetlife (very Chinese) and community, and the council has asked each district to doll itself up, attract footfall and hired architects to rebrand - the kind that wards off gentrification/ displacement and preserves the structures and community:

https://www.on-curating.org/files/oc...UABB_after.jpg

There are a whole slew of interesting things being added, and community projects going on - the kind of China one expects rather than moneyed, spotless versions where everyone's addicted to screens. It's the messy, grubby, chaotic version the country has tried so hard to eradicate - yet so atmospheric and alive.

Basically the kind of Chinese streetlife that's increasingly rare outside Hong Kong any more. Catch it before China sanitises it all away like everywhere else.

In some cities they are replicating these urban villages in '90s retro' themed concept malls. Everything below is brand new and built at great expense, employing moving entire buildings
brick by brick (and their contents) into the new structure.

It was in these places in Hong Kong (along with Tokyo's nightlife districts) that inspired Ridley Scott for Bladerunner:

Muppet, I cannot thank you enough for all of the knowledge you've dropped us about the greater Shenzhen area... I honestly feel inspired to bump that to the top of my travel 'must see' list. I sounds like my sort of place!

aw thanks bud. If there's one place you should visit in China -just one -it's gotta be Chongqing though. It's probably the world's most visual city, pure Bladerunner.

3 mountain ranges and 2 major rivers meet, where 3,500 bridges put together a 3D city riddled with tunnels, zip wires, cable cars and steps. Still gritty, very laid back and very hipster, the country's new edge of culture and trends. Famed for its fog, spicy cuisine and fabled source of the most beautiful women in the country.

other cities worthy of mention - Wuhan -not many people know how beautiful this city is, full of colonial architecture and just getting more and more impressive as the street progresses

and Changsha, China's best streetlife
