I was given the Leica D-Lux 3 point-&-shoot as a hand-me-down ($50!) - basically, a Panasonic DMC-LX2 with a red Leica badge - and that is what I've been using for the last 2+ years. The in-your-pocket portability factor and unobtrusive street presence are both nice. But I pine for the old interchangeable lens capabilities of a true SLR. I used one in High School photo class - the old film-loading kind! (though I've forgotten just about all I learned about technique & need to do some serious brush-up; that, and take some Photoshop classes).

But I'm wondering if anyone on the board has had an encounter yet with the new Panasonic Micro-4/3rd G1 system, which marries lens interchangeability with a slightly smaller form factor than a normal DSLR:

How do you like it? As I said last page, that's what I'm thinking of buying.

Fairly soon, things just might get a little fishy.

I ordered one:

Doesn't ship for a month, though.

Word.

I'm getting a 50D though. The opportunity costs for the 50D vs 5D seem to be leaning in the 50D's favor.

I would get a 5D, but:

1) It's getting up there in age.
2) I need every dollar I can for my 2 month trip to Buenos Aires.

Yes, it's getting a bit old, but feature-wise there isn't really anything really "old" about it, except for the fps perhaps (but I'm not an action photographer anyway). I don't really have any use for live view or making videos either.

Isn't a used 5D and a new 50D similar in price?

Umm.. .I currently have the D40X but it's not the best camera out there. I was thinking about switching to cannon. Either that or getting the D90. I haven't played with it yet but it's a nice feature that it can record video. It's also a 12.3 megapixel camera.

Has anyone seen the D3x by the way?

^I've seen some images from it. It looks pretty bad ass. From what I've read it's Nikon's 'official' camera for fashion photographers. You can blow images up from the DX3 to billboard size. The downside is that it doesn't perform nearly as well as the D3 at higher ISOs.

Here's one of the first images I've seen from it. The detail is pretty crazy.

I use a Panasonic TZ3, used to use a Canon A620 and miss its manual controls. I hope next year a good compact with long zoom, wide angle, manual controls, and a good sensor comes out so I can upgrade.

Well take that back and go to Costco. You get 18-200 VR lense, 2 Dvd's, a carrying bag, a 2 gig memory card and of course, the camera for 700 bucks.
