^ It will be once they complete this expansion.

Of course, the next major transformation for Chicago would be more TV shows that focus on something other than police, fire, and med. I'd like to see more comedy, perhaps more other types of dramas that would cultivate an even more diverse acting pool locally (beyond the usual "I play a working class cop who goes to the pub at the end of a long day to to discuss my failing marriage")

And, of course, more movies filmed here would always help

Exciting news about Cinespace expanding. I just wish they could make the area look more glamourous like in LA.

We need more shows akin to Family Matters, Married with Children and Perfect Strangers!

Another interesting fact: the new defunct Midwest Airlines was actually created by Kimberly Clark in 1984.

I miss Midwest Airlines--you'd always get a freshly baked chocolate chip cookie when you flew with them....
It started out as Midwest Express with a Convair 580 and a DC9-15 flying corporate around the country and grew into an airline. I understand they used to fly into ORD alot before the airline officially started. Midway Metrolink sort of copied the idea around the same time.

It was located on wrightwood in Lincoln Park.

It's since been demolished and replaced by a 3-flat condo building.

Definitely had more character. The new 3 flat looks pretty cookie-cutter.

In all seriousness, though, sitcoms set in a city don’t do much to build out a city’s image or talent pool.

I think the Chicago Med/Fire/PD series did a huge service to Chicago to achieve that. But I would like to see us catapult off of that success to do more in depth film work. I see it happening. I mean, Cinespace has grown into something utterly massive, I don’t see it packing up and disappearing once those Dick Wolf franchises end.

NYC' Seinfeld and Friends STRONGLY go against that.

Those two sitcoms were huge in building new york's image among younger people in the 90s.

^ I guess it can happen if the city is highlighted a lot in the TV show

Perfect Strangers and Married with Children did pretty much nothing to promote Chicago.

That opening sequence with the Buckingham Fountain end a few shots of the skyline are not enough.

The only sitcom that I recall having done it properly for Chicago was My Boys. Had it been a bigger and more successful hit it could have made a bigger impact in promoting Chicago the city to younger people

I would argue even further. Those shows helped bring back urban living in the US.

Most definitely. Of course it also made most of us wonder just how in the hell the Friends group could afford to live where they did!

I definitely believe another sitcom featuring Chicago would do wonders for the city's image. We need something other than police, fire and medical dramas, ie: Dick Wolf productions.

I think this is sort of TUP's point, but sitcoms are usually just shot in a stage set that looks like two or three rooms in a house. Obviously there are exceptions. But Fire and Police shows necessarily need to have scenes where the cops and firefighters are outside of the precinct doing something, not just one or two episodes per season IF the show is successful enough to have the budget for it. Basically The Simpsons is the only comedy that shows a real variety of locations. Seinfeld being the #1 show for a decade could do that too, to some extent, but they were in L.A. most of the time.

Shameless is probably the Chicago example of a modern show where people are Googling "Where is this location from Shameless?" I don't watch it, but it certainly makes Chicago seem colorful.

No Shameless fans?

For the local industry to grow, hopefully it can get more content filmed in Illinois that is set elsewhere. For example, Ozark is filmed in GA, but no one watching is thinking about that.
