the nebraska state capital left the biggest impression on me having stumbled upon it years ago in lincoln, although the illinois dome is noticeably tall for being a classic shape. lincoln, nebraska in general was the most pleasantly surprising state capital since seeing madison for the first time.

fun fact: 25 states have moved their state capital at least once.

in Idaho, Lewiston was the original territorial capital before it was controversially moved to Boise.

I'd like to visit Wisconsin's (the rotated entry way is unique) as well as California's and Michigan's. Plus Nebraska...love me some Bertram Goodhue. he also designed LA Public Library.

The location of capitals doesn't matter in today's world. Has anybody had to drive, fly, walk, pilgrimage to their state capital for any official business over the last year? After the year 2020, do we even need a physical capital anymore?

Today you can pay taxes, fees, tickets online sometimes attend court hearings. You can log in to a Congressional hearing/debate, watch local TV to hear debates and hearings. You can also donate money, call/email representatives contact lobbyists/special interests to represent you all online.

Im trying to think of any reason a normal person would have to travel to the capitols for anything and I cant really think of any lol.
Public advocacy & meeting with your state representatives (a.k.a. lobbying) is traditionally done in person, and often at state capitals. COVID-19 and virtual meetings pretty much threw that reason out the window though. Also, protests. Harrisburg's capitol is beautiful, btw. Among the best.

the capitol in madison is cruciform in plan, so the four entrances aren't really "rotated", they're just located at the knuckles instead of the finger tips.

Goodhue's art deco Nebraska capitol skyscraper is absolutely gorgeous. It's shorter than Louisiana's tower, which was built at the same time, but it's more elegant and architecturally cohesive.

At first sight I thought it was Louisiana's.

Florida also has a building that looks like that IIRC, in addition to the original 1840s Capitol dating back to statehood. (I find it awesome when govt buildings are as old as the entity!)

I think it was discussed earlier, but I believe no capital has moved in the last ~100 years, and it's less and less likely to happen at this point (not worth it; so many things can be done remotely and increasingly so.)

As I mentioned earlier, it's my personal favorite of the limited ones I've seen.

But on most of the best state capitol building ranking lists I've come across, it consistently places in the top 5.

The copper dome is perfect for the state of Arizona in the historical context. In the 90s there were some huge trees in front of the old domed building. Unfortunately they had to be removed because of structural damage.

I'm sorry, but Arizona's capitol has the scale and appearance of a university library.

When it was built, the population was about the size of a university.

I hate the Executive Tower, and I normally like brutalist architecture.

Wisconsin's is great. Not enough good things to say about Madison in general, but hopefully in the future it'll be possible to visit on a summer weekend when the farmer's market is in full swing.

I've always hated Ohio's capitol building. It's nice enough on the inside, but looks so plain on the outside. It looks like they ran out of money for a dome, so they just stopped.

It's like Florida. The older capitol building is rather small reflecting a different era requiring a new huge brutalist tower right behind it. Pretty good views from the top.

Ron DeSantis's office is in the old building where as the legislature meets in the new(er) additions

For best state capitol buildings, Iowa's is like a golden fortress, lording over Des Moines.

The state Law Library is a quite lovely room:
