Hypersonic 'space plane' promises four-hour London to Sydney flights by 2030s

https://edition.cnn.com/travel/artic...scn/index.html

Quote:
.....

- The UK Space Agency announced Tuesday at the UK Space Conference 2019 that it would be working more closely with the Australian Space Agency in an agreement dubbed a "world-first Space Bridge." — The Synergetic Air-Breathing Rocket Engine (SABRE) engine, from Oxfordshire-based Reaction Engines, looks to be the jewel in the crown of this new enterprise. — This is technology that could definitely deliver that. We're talking the 2030s for operational service, and the work is already very advanced.

- In April 2019, Reaction Engines announced successful tests of a precooler, simulating conditions at Mach 3.3, or more than three times the speed of sound. That's more than 50% faster than the cruising speed of Concorde. — At such high speeds, air flowing through the engine can reach incredibly high temperatures, which can potentially cause damage. A precooler reduces the temperature of gases before they enter the core engine itself. Recent tests prove that the component can cool gases from over 1,000 C to ambient temperature in less than 1/20th of a second.

- It "breathes" air from the atmosphere, allowing greater fuel efficiency and lower weight than existing rocket engines that need to carry their own oxygen supply. "The main thing with Sabre is it's like a hybrid of a rocket engine and an aero engine, so it allows a rocket to breathe air. — Rockets really haven't progressed in 70 years, whereas aero engines have become very efficient, so if you can combine an aero engine and a rocket you can have a very lightweight efficient propulsion system and basically create a space plane.

Concorde successor AS2 takes leap forward with vast new Florida HQ

https://www.cnn.com/travel/article/a...-hq/index.html

.....

- The race is heating up to produce the first supersonic passenger aircraft to enter commercial service in more than 50 years. US planemaker Aerion, whose AS2 jet promises to fly New York to London in 4.5 hours, is building a massive new global headquarters in Florida ahead of production beginning on the supersonic craft in 2023. --- The 8-12 passenger AS2 business jet will travel at Mach 1.4 (more than 1,000 mph), which means it could shave three and a half hours off standard journey times from New York to Cape Town, and more than four hours off trips between JFK and Singapore and JFK and Sydney.

- Aerion has already secured a domestic and international order backlog which now tops $6.5 billion and it plans to deliver 300 aircraft over 10 years of production. The AS2's first flight is slated for 2024 and the company intends to take the plane to market in 2026. The craft has a price tag of $120 million, which the planemaker thinks is a price that people will pay because of the time savings. --- The AS2 is designed to meet Stage 5 Airplane Noise Standards, the most stringent landing and takeoff noise regulations. But perhaps one of the AS2's most innovative features is its "boomless cruise" which allows the plane to fly supersonically over land without the boom striking the ground.

You can not snow ski, see historical buildings, and dine on European prepared meals using Zoom.

8-12 passengers will be difficult for public transport profitability, but since when do billionaires care about private toys being profitable?

Whatever, I forsee a court ordered total asset liquidation in the future for this company regardless of how neat people think it would be to fly oligarch express.

Why do we not use flying saucers instead of planes today?

^ That's all the proof you need that there isn't a captured spaceship sitting in an underground hanger out in area 51, because if there was there's no way that this societies industrial complex would not have capitalized and monetized the technology by now - first with military craft and shortly after as civilian.

Our jet liners still have after 6 decades the same basic form, as this is the most suitable form.

Supersonic airliner could fly LA to Tokyo in under three hours

https://www.cnn.com/travel/article/a...jet/index.html

Quote:
.....

- The Aerion AS3 is a Mach 4+ commercial airliner, revealed Monday, that its manufacturers say will be able to carry 50 passengers at a range of 7,000 nautical miles. "Our vision is to build a future where humanity can travel between any two points on our planet within three hours. Supersonic flight is the starting point, but it is just that -- the beginning," said Aerion's chairman, president and CEO, Tom Vice, in a statement. "We must push the boundaries of what is possible." --- Earlier this year Aerion expanded its ongoing partnership with NASA's Langley Research Center, with a specific focus on commercial flight in the Mach 3-5 range. To put that in layperson's terms, that's 2,300 to 3,800 miles per hour, or 3,700 to 6,200 kph -- or up to seven times as fast as a regular long-distance passenger plane.

Are there enough businesspeople/rich people paying $10,000 for tickets to make this project feasible?

The AS3 conceptualization and design work is currently under way, with more details set to be revealed later in 2021. It does not even exist on paper today.

The AS2 -- which promises to fly New York to London in 4.5 hours -- is Aerion's bid to become the first supersonic passenger aircraft to enter commercial service in more than 50 years.
The 8-12 passenger business jet will travel at Mach 1.4 (more than 1,000 mph), with production starting on the supersonic craft in 2023. The AS2's first flight is slated for 2024 and the company intends to take the plane to market in 2026.

A business jet is a far cry away from a commercial airline jet.

Keep the jetliner for intercontinental flights, but make this mainstream for flying long distance over oceans. And plus there’s no one or anything to complain about sonic booms over the ocean.

Are the bottom seats going to be discounted for being in the fart blast zone?

So many things have advanced in the last 50 years that make our lives easier but air travel is a glaring exception.

They are no faster but a hell of a lot more uncomfortable due to the packing of everyone like sardines. You use to get a meal and pillows and now your lucky if you get half a can of pop and a mini bag of pretzels. Of course years ago you didn't have to check yourself in and could arrive for your flight half an hour before it left as opposed to 3 hours now.

The good news is that things will improve due to the introduction of hydrogen planes within the next 15 years. Not only are they zero emissions but also reduce interior engine noise by up to 50%. I'm sure we will enjoy the same lousy service and painful waits at the terminal but at least we will be able to travel guilt free and a hell of a lot quieter.

Even with this, the sad reality is that air travel will never go back to the pleasant experience people use to look forward to.

The company that will make those supersonic jets, Boom, says they want to scale up until most long-haul flights are supersonic--and United says they want 500 such jets before the end of the decade. It may only be a dream, but it's a fun dream--I always wanted to fly in a Concorde because of its iconic shape, but any supersonic jet will do the trick.
