It's about time they did something on those parking lots, when they tore down the Civic Arena (should have been landmarked and reused) a lot of promises were made, and I'm surprised to see all these years later just parking lots still.

Pittsburgh has a gem of a downtown, from gmaps I see they're building a platform over 579 to connect this area, is that going to be a park or more buildable land? I'm interested to see the masterplan. Who knows what this building will actually look like, it's obvious they told the renderer to make it as ethereal as possible, and not much else.

What else could you do with a retractable roof arena from the 1960s? It was a cool building, but its location was a major mistake. Not only did it serve to destroy literally thousands of structures (houses, apartment buildings, commercial buildings, churches, schools, etc.) which made up the historic Lower Hill District, the Arena, its sea pf parking lots, and an expressway served to choke Downtown off from the rest of the city...and hastened its demise in the 1970s to just about 10 years ago.

The Pittsburgh Penguins were granted development rights to the 30 acre parcel, and they've received extension after extension after extension because they are politically connected and want the parking revenue. That's the main reason why the land has sat vacant since the Arena was torn down 20 years ago.

The cap will be a park, helping to reconnect downtown and the Lower Hill. Can't build anything atop as 579 will still traverse beneath.

2022-2012=10

Your point isn't any less valid though. Whether it's 1, 5, 10 or 20 years, this has been completely ridiculous to have this much land sit vacant in the downtown of a major city.

The parking lots have been helpful though, as they charge much less than other downtown garages/lots.

Does anyone know whether all these surface lots will go away soon, to make room for this project?

The construction crane is in place as of today. The new deck park adjacent to the site will provide awesome views of the tower going up.

Ha! Oops, that was a typo.

Yeah, exactly. It's such an abrupt cut-off from downtown. You have the city's two tallest buildings and then nothing... parking lots. This new office tower and the planned condos should help ease the transition, in terms of skyline aesthetics and on-the-ground experience.

The new park is open -- checked it out the other day. Will indeed provide a great place to watch this new tower rise.

I like those renderings, and the virtual views from different floors. Based on the 24th floor view, looking across to the US Steel and Gulf towers to get an approximation, FNB will 'appear' like it's around 500 ft tall or so. The best view, once completed, should be coming across Veteran's Bridge and on Rt 28.

The Veterans Bridge and Rt 28 will have awesome views of the new Strip District office tower as well.

Other good viewing locations

Bigelow Blvd inbound

Upper Hill District

Emerald View Park

Strip District

Sorry. I tried loading from a new iPhone. I will post from my laptop shortly. I have quite a few construction photos including the adjacent I579 cap park.
