Yeah, that view has been completely transformed, and will only get better over time.

I have to say, though, in this pic you posted here, I find the one on the far left way more charming and likeable than the one on the far right.

Tangentially, but is Urbanize Chicago not updating anymore/dunzo? I haven't seen any new articles since mid October-ish

They're looking for a new hire since Jay, the guy who was working the website, took another posistion. Anybody know any other site besides this and chicagoyimby where we can keep up with Chicago development?

I miss Chicago Curbed, that was a great site. Wish it would come back.

I think most Americans (if they're not entirely anti-urban) prefer the aesthetic of walkup tenements to skyscrapers... but it's clear we're never gonna build entire neighborhoods of walkups anymore. Just try building a new 4-story courtyard building anywhere in Chicago. The political barriers to that kind of wholesale redevelopment are just way too steep, because people also prefer the aesthetic of SFH neighborhoods to walkups, and apparently putting up a 3-story party wall next to an SFH is a violent crime.

Theoretically if you could clear-cut Lincoln Park and replace it with nothing but 4-story courtyards, the result would be denser than Streeterville or River North. But there are simply too many forces lined up against that kind of development. The future is gonna be a lot more spiky.

Oh no! I didn't realize Urbanize Chicago was looking for someone new, it was filling the void left by Chicago Curbed for me. Hopefully, they find someone soon.

I don't know of too many other sites, I sometimes check Bisnow Chicago and Chicago Business Journal (lots of paywalls), but they definitely aren't the place to go if you want daily/weekly updates on specific projects like this forum.

Nope, I've always been here, just very busy but still lurking when time permits. Thanks for inquiring though. I keep my finger on the pulse of multiple markets, hence why you may have thought I was in Houston for a while.

Developer set to break ground on 27-story Fulton Market apartment tower
Quote:
Another construction crane is coming to the Fulton Market District.

Chicago developer Thomas Roszak and partners are preparing to break ground on a 27-story apartment tower at 160 N. Elizabeth St. after securing construction financing for the project. It’s one of several apartment developments sprouting in the trendy West Loop neighborhood, which has shrugged off the coronavirus pandemic and regained its momentum as the city’s hottest real estate submarket.

A Roszak venture has obtained a construction loan for its 375-unit project at Elizabeth and Randolph streets from Little Rock, Ark.-based Bank OZK, Roszak said. The group is financing the rest of the cost with its own equity and an equity investment from Los Angeles-based Ares Management, he said. He declined say how much Bank OZK and Ares are investing in the development.

Wow. I didn't even realize this was on the radar. While 27 stories isn't impressive by itself, there's nothing around it. Super fun to see these larger towers going up in the West Loop. I can't wait to see how construction has progressed in the area in December when I return to Chicago.

Unless you're talking about literally next to this and across the street, this isn't really true anymore that there is "nothing":

This is a view from August from literally 1 street west of this site:

Behind that high rise in the distance:
https://www.google.com/maps/@41.8861...7i16384!8i8192

And a block west of the high rise in the first picture's background:
https://chicagoyimby.com/2021/07/145...west-loop.html

This is also going up in the same area right now but we can try and erase it from our memories:

There's also THREE Michelin star restaurants close to this (2 2-star restaurants and 1 1-star restaurant).

Yes, poor language choice. I just meant that the prominence these buildings are getting in the immediate neighborhood where it's historically been much lower density is the what's impressive. Even this past Summer, walking down Randolph, it still amazed me knowing buidlings like 900 W. Randolph, along with other proposals are going up there. Of course the neighborhood has a ton of things around it.

This area is going to go through quite the change if all these happen.

Without going too far off topic, do you guys think it's possible a building taller than let's say 800 feet will be built in West Loop/Fulton Market someday?

How long of a timeline we talking about? I would say its inevitable in the decades to come, but probably unlikely in the next few years. But you never know. WLCO tried to keep the West Loop low-rise and fought any tall proposal west of Halsted in the 2000s and 2010s. Not exactly a successful effort if you look at what is going on today.

^ While the menu may be limited, I would totally eat at that restaurant...

Other than that god-awful beige wrapping on the building, this is solid infill.
