I think most Americans (if they're not entirely anti-urban) prefer the aesthetic of walkup tenements to skyscrapers... but it's clear we're never gonna build entire neighborhoods of walkups anymore. Just try building a new 4-story courtyard building
anywhere in Chicago. The political barriers to that kind of wholesale redevelopment are just way too steep, because people also prefer the aesthetic of SFH neighborhoods to walkups, and apparently putting up a 3-story party wall next to an SFH is a violent crime.
Theoretically if you could clear-cut Lincoln Park and replace it with nothing but 4-story courtyards, the result would be denser than Streeterville or River North. But there are simply too many forces lined up against that kind of development. The future is gonna be a lot more spiky.
