I'm no structural engineer, but it looks like the cross bracing between the vertical posts is capable of sliding. Is that the case? They are not riveted in place.

Here's what that section, along the north end of Randolph, is supposed to look like:

Not riveted, welded - they aren't going anywhere.

I'm incredibly curious now with all that steel bracing to the core in James' pic. Those steel joints above the cross bracing in Harry's pic makes it look like they are planning on building out over the sidewalk.

Anyone seen the diagrams for this thing? .... spyguy?

It must be for the crane? They haven't made a spot for it within the core. Although that steel seems pretty permanent.

Wow, that's crazy. That crane's going to be really far out in the street then -- it's already protruding out over the temporary sidewalk. Updates as of 9:05 today (7/28):

Confirmed with a surveyor ( SW corner of garage in JM's shot above ) that the extra steel is indeed for the crane.

Wow. This has been a fun little mystery to solve. I wonder if the crane had to be positioned so far out onto the street to accommodate the crane from 215 W Lake. Fascinating.

^ Yeah, I wonder why they didn't just position it within the core......could that really be the reason (even if this crane for 151 is one with a luffing jib - as I would expect, though I suppose not a certainty?)

^^ At any rate, nice work getting to the bottom of this one - you called it - and confirmed it!

Core beginning to rise crane base being installed above sidewalk to allow site traffic to pass underneath.

July 24
Steel !

July 25

July 28

A similar configuration was used on 111 Wacker where the crane was also mounted above the sidewalk.

Harry, I might be being a little dense here, but what is it exactly you're saying will be moved to 130?
