It's definetly nice to see this area intensifying but the design is generic and well, as cheap as the developer could manage (is there even an actual architect involved? lol) I'm happy they're saving the old industrial buildings though and the podium seems to be the perfect scale.

Proposals are weird sometimes. Sometimes we have proposals hitting the market right away, and some may hang around for years before being released to the public. This one hasn't been approved by the city yet. With the supply of condos in the Entertainment District being so saturated, a lot of projects are on the market for a year or two before construction starts. I think realistically, this may be held back and be part of the next wave of developments.

Each time I see this design it grows on me. It certainly is different from the 'Toronto norm'. And potentially could become a very iconic building on the skyline if done right.

"If done right" is the key phrase. Based on the rendering above, it reminds me of that appalling "elephant" building in Bangkok.

My goodness, that would be horrendous if Toronto ended up with something like that Bangkok monstrosity!

I sure hope they don't actually put that huge red W on top of it. Talk about ugly! Not as bad as the elephant, but still...

Any news with this proposal? I really hope it's not approved, or atleast there's a redesign. Talk about ugly, but not as much as the India thing. Just, those boxes I swear.

Mercer Street's 57-Storey 'O' Re-worked as 49-Storey 'U'

Quote:
Early last year, Madison Homes' audacious concept for a 67-storey O-shaped tower on Toronto's Mercer Street quickly became one of the year's most talked-about potential developments. While the Entertainment District project was later formally submitted to the City at a reduced height of 57 storeys, the 190-metre proposal at 15-35 Mercer still conspicuously exceeded the 157-metre "clothes line" height plateau established for the neighbourhood following the completion of the nearby Festival Tower.

Designed by Teeple Architects, the proposal has now been formally re-submitted to the City as a pair of 49-storey towers. Forgoing the distinctive bridge element in favour of a more typical form, the project now also falls within the Planning Department's height parameters for the area, with both towers topping out at 156 metres.

While the proposed 57-storey concept called for 884 condominium units and 163 hotel rooms, the revised project—which was re-submitted in October—now features 718 condominiums and 102 hotel suites. Like the previous proposal, the project would see three heritage façades retained at 15, 19, and 31 Mercer Street, with a hotel restaurant/bar taking up much of the Mercer frontage, and a shared 9-storey podium rising above.

This project is now known as the Nobu Hotel and Residences.....supposedly demolition will be beginning later by this year. The massing and towers haven't changed their design.
