Plaza REIT, the partner in The Shoppes At Galway has updated their website and it now shows much more detail of the site. It shows several "leases pending" and also shows A&W as a new addition, positioned near the current Tim Hortons.

Just what metro needs...another A&W. We already have about half dozen in St. John’s and metro. Gawd, give us something new.

I know I don't need to remind anyone on this forum... but change is something most people have a hard time dealing with in this area. Looks like that mentality can be applied for developers as well.

Hard to believe that a new A&W would be going here with another location just down the street on entrance to Donavans Industrial Park. Re-location maybe??

Larger space currently not built next to Dollarama also shown as "Lease Pending". Could see Giant Tiger going there.

Sad to note that same Developer also manages Best Buy/Pet Smart property on East End. Both Second Cup and Montana's are shown as Available. Thought I read that there was some movement to re-open that Second Cup location.

Not really a fan of the way the The Shoppes At Galway has turned out. Less so about the retail options and more about the site layout itself. It could just be that landscaping hasn't been finished but it feels more barebones and industrial looking than any of the other existing power centers around.

Yup. I get that the area is still developing, but it would be great to have more trees planted for a wind break.
As open an area as it is IDK how much difference you'll see, but it can't hurt to try.

The Second Cup recently reopened. Known for awhile that the Montanas location closed - unfortunate cause we went there a lot but that's all you can do.

Danny is at it again. Plopping down a 30 ft xmas tree on city controlled property without permission from the city and then getting all pissy about it when told he needed a permit and insurance in case it causes an accident because of a distraction on the roundabout. He may own the developments but he don’t own the streets. He probably thinks he does though. Here is the news link...

Danny is a tool. Height there is around 700 ft ASL. Imagine the wind alone, not counting the distraction. People already drive erratic in the roundabouts in there. It also blocks visual cues from the roundabout entrances.
Pretty pissy response from a guy who's firm specialized in accident lawsuits.

I think I speak for everyone when I say that I wish we would never hear another peep out of Danny's mouth again. Can't he just fade off into obscurity?

Another Danny Complaint

"DewCor, developer of the Galway neighbourhood in St. John’s, is requesting that the city compensate the company for the savings that its decorative streetlights will have."

Galway area being considered for multi-pad ice complex in St. John's:

https://www.thetelegram.com/sports/l...-johns-543595/

Quote:
Jack Lee and Stadium Partners NL are planning a four-pad facility in the Galway section of St. John’s.

In addition to the hockey rinks, the complex will also have an area with a Field Turf component to accommodate sports such as soccer.

How many roadblocks will The City throw up to prevent this from happening? "Oh, it will compete with the Mile One general skating" or "too much traffic" or whatever else they can do to get back at Danny (even though it isn't Danny's project)

1 hour ice times will be $250+ lol "why aren't kids playing hockey anymore?!"

I guess if a private developer is building these then they are for-profit facilities, yeah?

Heard that IKEA is coming and it’s going next to Costco. Probably next year. Has anyone heard anything?

Where did you hear this from? That rumour has been floating around for years. Mostly wishful thinking though.
I still believe that St. John’s is way too small, even with the metro population to support a full sized IKEA Store.
Though lately IKEA have been talking about establishing stores with a much smaller footprint so that might be a possibly. I know they are putting a much smaller IKEA store in downtown Toronto so maybe they’ll explore other areas of Canada too including Newfoundland with that concept.
