Used to be just plain green space. Technically this is just a upgrade of that green space to something more useful and interesting but still green space.

Pretty much the land was part of a swap with the billionaire who owns the Ambassador Bridge 10 years ago it was idle space with the ability to store containers and the like. Before that the area was rail yard that was part of the main port infrastructure for 80 years during the Michigan Central Depot era and slightly beyond. In the pre-auto boom days the rail yard was part of the old Michigan Central station downtown.

The city has been freeing up waterfront space for parkland over the past 20 years with a focus of moving west side riverfront industry south of the Ambassador Bridge away from desirable neighborhoods. Theres still a fair amount of light industry near the river & logistical space but the opening up of waterfront with the bridge to bridge riverwalk along with connecting & consolidating parkland is part of a larger master plan. The south side of Corktown is envisioned as a medium-high density mixed use neighborhood long term.

Through the help of federal grants one of the old rail spurs by the docks is being extended to a warehouse to accommodate storage and transport by ship of agricultural & electronic related automotive components. Though the newly expanded Port of Monroe is expected to handle container ships apparently with Ford completing a finishing plant for Mustangs next door there’s a plan to begin exports by sea to Europe.

I love what is being done with the Ralph C Wilson Park & Riverwalk but most of Detroit shipping and trade related facilities have been in private hands which fell into disrepair & disuse with the decline of the rail and shipping industries. It’s been a nightmare to try and revitalize Detroit shipping as the Port Authority had very limited powers and investing public funds into furthering the Moroun near monopoly on trade was a terrible idea.

Opening up and making south Corktown desirable for building a dense residential neighborhood while swapping vacant city land for use by The Detroit International Bridge Company for their use hopefully comes out as a win win. Especially with funds being put into expanding public transportation water, road and rail infrastructure to promote trade, competition & better use of waterfront space.

Small steps, but seemingly laying the groundwork for something new and hopefully better.

Here's a photo I took yesterday. It definitely looks taller than the RenCen from this angle.

Such a great project for Detroit.

Hopefully not just wishful thinking - but I feel like downtown Detroit has realistic potential for a major revival. It's got a lot of pieces and features that many other cities lack.

I think it can mirror the reurbanization and modernization of downtown Chicago - albeit about 20 years later.

Great shots and finds all around, props BVictor1 capturing shots from locations and angles I havn’t seen before. There’s some absolute stunners in there.

Oh man that shot from the eastside is beautiful. I love the way the Hudson’s tower helps balance out the core of the skyline visa vi the Ren Cen as well as the greater effect it has along the Woodward spine. It’s in just the right place to create a stepping stone / staircase effect on the urban core with the Book, Broderick & other higher towers & tower clusters among the spine of smaller skyscrapers & mid rises.

Can anybody tell if this thing will be finished by the end of this year or no. I've read it is supposed on schedule to be. Please correct me if I am wrong. It is a fine looking structure.

The tower is pretty much topped out now. However there's still much interior work to be done before it can be occupied and ready for use.
