That last rendering looks about 1 1/2 - 2 cubes high than it will be in actuality. Compare to Wells Fargo Center, which is 765 ft. high, and a similar distance to the camera, but it's barely over half as tall as the rendering. At 1,049 ft tall, compared to Wells Fargo, you're looking at about another 1/4 of the height, or another 2 cubes. So this rendering must be off for scale.

I hope the hurricane doesn't affect this too much, hopefully only temporarily.

Thoughts and prayers to everyone down there but I guess they're used to it :|

Groundbreaking Date Announced For 1,049-Foot Supertall Waldorf Astoria Hotel & Residences In Downtown Miami
https://floridayimby.com/2022/10/gro...esidences.html

Quote:
Today, national developer Property Markets Group along with Canadian private equity firm Greybrook Realty Partners, global investment company Mohari Hospitality, S2 Development, and global hospitality company Hilton proudly announce the official groundbreaking of Waldorf Astoria Hotel & Residences in Downtown Miami. Located at 300 Biscayne Boulevard, the soaring tower will rise 100 stories and 1,049 feet above Biscayne Bay, marking Miami’s first supertall tower and the tallest residential building south of New York City. This also marks the debut of one of the world’s most iconic hospitality brands, Waldorf Astoria, in the Miami and South Florida market. John Moriarty Associates is the general contractor and is scheduled to break ground on Thursday, October 27, 2022.

“The highly-anticipated groundbreaking of Waldorf Astoria Hotel & Residences Miami sets a new tone and new standard for development here in Miami. The market is thriving and projects like this are coming to life to meet the demand from our luxury audience,” said Ryan Shear, Managing Partner of PMG. “Working with our partners and the Hilton team behind Waldorf Astoria has been incredibly rewarding, and we look forward to continuing our upward momentum.”

This says construction has already started but I'll go with Oct 27th date stated above, they may have jumped the gun here.

Is it 1049 or 1041 feet tall? I've read both.

There is now evidence of piling & foundation work:
https://www.thenextmiami.com/groundb...l-new-details/

"The developers told the Herald that drilling and concrete pouring is now underway to build piles for the foundation, reaching 180 feet below ground.

A foundation permit has been issued, and the foundation is expected to take about 10 months to build.

A construction permit to begin vertical work is expected to be issued within months, so work won’t be slowed down, the developers said."

Miami finally gets a supertall U/C. I believe this will be ever so slightly taller than Bank of America Tower in Atlanta to become the tallest tower in the South (if you consider Florida to be "the South").

Physically, but, not culturally.

by CTBUH height, it'll be the 4th tallest in the nation outside of NYC & Chicago, trailing Comcast in Philly, Wilshire Grand in LA, and Salesforce in SF.

but both comcast and wilshire grand use some fairly egregious spires to reach their official heights. depending on how you want t define the "roof" height of SF's salesfore tower, this new miami super-tall will either be the 1st or 2nd tallest in the nation outside of NYC & Chicago by roof height.

it's a pretty big deal at the national level.

Congrats Miami!

Not sure how I feel about the design yet. For me, this is one of those buildings I will just have to wait until it's built to really formulate an opinion. Definitely don't hate the design.

What I love about this building is it will change the Miami skyline as a new tallest. That always seems to have a cool effect. When OKC built the Devon tower, it totally redefined the skyline. I hope this building has the same impact.

however you feel about the design, i think we can all agree that it's light years better than miami's current tallest.

an older post of mine on the topic:

Panorama Tower | 827 FT | 81 Floors | 2018

Without being able recall every single one in NYC, Panorama Tower might be my least favorite 800+ footer in the nation, not because it's some horrendously offensive architectural abomination, but because it's so damn generically blah and forgettable.

Even when I find a skyscraper to be actively ugly, like chicago's 311 S Wacker, I can still appreciate the fact that the architects we're at least trying to do something despite the fact that the result might not look all that good. But Panorama Tower looks like no one even tried, as if they took the most generic and unremarkable 20 story Florida beach-side condo building they could find and then just scaled it up 400%.

When you're designing a new tallest building for a city, you simply have to try harder than that. And as fad-ish as the new stacked boxes Waldorf-Astoria design is, I'd still MUCH rather have that as my city's tallest building than the nation's tallest generic condo tower.
